re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Absolutely. I haven't believed John Paul II to have been running things for some time now given his health. I'm honestly rather surprised he chose to pass away in office as he had been in such poor health that he could have stepped away while still alive.

Do you think there will be many actual changes in this new papacy? since Ratzinger has has basically in charge for a long time now it seems he will just keep doing the same.
I think the next papal election is the really interesting one, if Benedict lives as long as John Paul then thats just six years away. I hope that time there will be a shift toward a bit of a moderate.
All the liberal pastors I know just said "Damn, not him" literally
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Well..it seems that people believe that John Paul I was poisoned for his liberal beliefs and was trying to make the Church more liberal and so they only want conservatives now.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

I'm afraid all they will ever want are conservatives, but they can slip up and actually vote in someone they think is a crazy nazi and he is actually a reconciler; at least I can hope in my fantasy world

The Catholic voice is stronger now than it has been in decades - JohnPaul's true legacy. Ratzinger has been diligent in securing his power-base - hence the quick election. The largest centers of control are now Latin America and the ever rising Africa (the most conservative of all.) America hardly registers as a blip in a world-wide congregation of 1 billion, and the dissent among some American liberal cathlics only serves as further proof of our alienation on the world stage.

Mel Gibson must be ecstatic.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Its not just American Catholics who are at odds with the conservative movement of the church, large numbers of actual congregants in Africa and especially Latin American are there because of Liberation Theology. Liberatin Theologies the leaders of the church are trying to shove aside as heretical because their power bases are threatened.

I too would have preferred a more liberal Pope, but it simply was not in the cards --- I diagree with many stands of the Church but still have a very deep faith -- I would like to be able to feel comfortable in direction of the church and its representation of the changing views of many of its members.

"He has been described as conservative, and as the current Dean of the College of Cardinals he is widely respected for his uncompromising if ultraconservative principles and his ability to be critical." - NYTimes

Well, that pretty much sums it up.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

It wasn't in the cards because the deck was stacked.
The only time there was a chance for progress in the Catholic Church was Pope John Paul I and he was murdered when they learned he was liberal (some people even think it was Ratzinger who did it).

I find it fascinating as the Catholic Church continues to march backwards to the first century. Very disapointing but not unexpected. I'm just surprised he didn't become Pope Adolph the First.

I am saddened that they didn't go with someone more middle-of-the-road. It seems that the trend towards conservativism (sp... eek, is that a word) spreads outside the US.

beaver if you're raised Roman Catholic..as I was...it becomes part of your heritage more than anything. I still consider myself Catholic although I don't believe in most of what they try to teach us.
