who actually HAS a chance, cookie. The lating american "delegation" (for lack of a better word) is quite strong (not the strongest) and latin america is mostly catholic.

I recall it being quite a big deal in '78, with lots of coverage, every time smoke went up especially.

not being Catholic, it's hard for me to feel the suspense of it, but it's VERY easy, Catholic or not, to recognize the amazing amount of power the Pope wields. That's why I hope for a man of inclusion and a man to bring Catholicism in line with its myriad of followers in this new millenium.

well, the regional contingents don't have as much power any more. And what detracts the Latin American candidates are the liberal social views vs. the conserative theology and dogma... Even the Italian candidates couldn't coalesce around each other....

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Yeah, but there's been talk about a latin american or african pope being long overdue. I second bws, as a "recovering catholic" I hope they pick a leader that's inclusive. Whoever it is, I really don't want it to be the italian guy, though.

Just to put this in perspective for all you non-Catholics...

Imagine...Tony night...Idina/Kristen/Donna/Tonya..."And the Tony goes to...wait we have to see white smoke before we can tell you..."

That is what millions of people are going through right now.
PEACE.

It would be so great to see a progressive pope, I'm hoping as I watch the doors. Is there a chance? maybe, but its not great.
I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

It's definitely time to begin reconciling the "liberal" views that the newer Catholics hold and to begin addressing the issues that are at the front of life for African and Latin American Catholics. This is not a time to be continuing ridiculous policies that continue to promote the spread of STDs because of perceived bans in the Bible.

It's going to be weird saying that instead of John Paul II...
