re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

My kid has an obsession with "The Price Is Right." Since he's home on vacation, he's allowed to watch it. (Like we could stop him without a melt-down!) First the satellite went out. We sent him upstairs so he could use his own television which has an antenna, and ten minutes before they finished the show, it got pre-empted for the announcement. (Which by the way, they didn't actually confirm with bells and such until a few minutes after twelve so it wouldn't have really killed them to do a crawl, "Smoke at the Vatican, we will go live as soon as we have more information." But noooooo, oh nooooooo! Everybody's got to be the first one on the air with the information!

Cookie, if two in a row are any indication...

While I wish Pope Benedict a long and healthy life, it will be interesting to see who follows him.

I thought he would have honored John Paul II by going to JP III

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

I think he made an important statement by not selecting that name. This is his Papacy, not an extension of JPII's.

He honored him in his first words as Pope.

Maybe he felt JPIIs work had been too extensive to try to rule in his shadow as JPIII.

I still don't get the implication of him choosing the name Benedict. Is it negative or positive? And why?

So lensman, will the showcase showdown be re-broadcast at a later date? Let's boycott CBS for preempting it. That sailor boy was a hottie!
PEACE.

at the risk of getting slammed or hate PM's -- can I ask that this thread be kept to those who are intereseted and respectful of the events today -- to many this is not a joke or funny matter.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Tico - Benedict is considered the founder of western monasticism, and as such, believed strongly in the seperation of the spiritual self from the real physical world. I see his use of the name as re-enforcement of his belief that the church's strength is to be solidified by 'hunkering down' within the paradigms of the past, and withstanding the 'temptations' of the modern world (essentially the opposite of what bwaysinger was hoping for.)

I was raised by OSB priests (Oblates of St. Benedict) in case some would wonder why I say these things.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

Yeah, it's unfortunate. The name definitely signals a return to the "old days." He might have been a friend of John Paul II, but his own statements have been far more conservative than John Paul II in his most liberal moments. As I said before, he equated religious fundamentalism with merely holding to basic tenets of faith.
Again, expect nothing but a few big steps backward socially under this papacy.
That said, I would LOVE to be proved wrong.

re: White Smoke from the Sistine Chapel?

This is hardly a surprise. The vatican is a political force on par with the most powerful nations on earth. The entire voting bloc (save 2) was appointed by JohnPaul, and Ratzinger was his hand-picked successor - and rumored to have been the one really running things in recent times anyway.
