I do. Animals are cute, but I don’t like them enough to be a caretaker to one.
I have a fishy, but I think having a pug will be more fun. I can take it walking down to the neighborhood park.

Oh joy for you!! They are soooo adorable.
oooo :)
i have a lab. she's the sweetest dog in the world. labs are so much fun.
i could never be pet-free. my pets are my friends :)
I’ll tell you why I started this thread:
I know a lot of people who wish to remain childfree, and I totally support that. Raising children isn’t for everyone, and neither is raising pets.
umm.... ok?
i dont think anyone here was saying it was for everyone
If someone doesn't want the responsibility then of course they should not own a pet. But the benefits are so wonderful!
They are always your baby
They don't judge you, ever
They always provide companionship
I know that. I just wanted to know who liked being pet-free. I always see posts all over the Internet about being childfree, so why not pet-free? I know other people who wouldn’t want a pet either.

Im pet-phobic
and children-phobic
Chilfren are different. They suck.
Nope the three kids-- two of which are the sloppiest, smelliest, stankyist; albeit sweetest teenagers alive, keep my house is a constant state of disarray and very nasty socks (how do they do that I ask you?)... I would not want to imagine what a pet would do to my world..
I will totally drink to that.
I will take my emotionally unstable Bengal-mix, Miss Princess Nefertiti Von Bulow, II, over a screaming mucus-ejecting ankle-biter anyday.

Great name, Jaily!
Is it a nod to Sonny or Klaus?
And I’ll take the screaming child who will eventually be potty-trained and take her own shower over the pet whose waste I will always have to dispose of. Not to mention having to buy the pet food and giving the pet a bath, and all that pet hair.
I like visiting other people’s pets, just don’t ask me to take them home with me.
RC and I had a sweet cocker Spaniel for 14 years. We loved her and now that she has passed we miss her. Pets are a huge responsibility, and you should be 100% certain you are willing to put in a ton of effort to raising one. That being said I miss my dog, but at the moment I enjoy the freedom of being pet free.
taz...
true enough -- other people's children suck big time-- but mostly because parents want an heir or maybe a toy is a better description, but sho 'nuff they do not a little person with ideas, thoughts, talents and beliefs that may or may not mirror their own.
Alas, to avoid being a total hypocrite that I am on this subject I will admit that mine are pretty cool--they all look a bit like me- and that, for the most part, is where the resemblance ends. And by the way -- they are on some sort of mission to bully me into getting a pet; ideally a dog. It's getting to a crisis point now that they are working as a unit...for awhile it was only the wee lass..now the boys have jumped in-- I think she must be blackmailing them.

i HATE-being pet-free, although the lack of reponsibilty has its perks.
for the past week, ive been dogsitting for my sister & her 3 boxer, 3 french bulldog household & every minute was pure joy.
its a lot of work; each of the dogs is on a special diet (all raw foods, & theres prep time for each meal). & they have to be walked two at a time.
but nobody in my life has ever acted so happy & excited to see me as those dogs...expecially my sweetheart, Lotus. & the best part is they *aren't* acting; they REALLY ARE that happy to see me!!!
my sister told me today that Lotus keeps going to the guestroom, looking for me & sighing loudly...& it just makes me wanna throw up that i cant be there for her, that im not the perfect daddy i want to be.
Lovely Lotus
here's some pix of Bianca ("Binks", if she likes ya)
i guess i want to say it *IS* like children, in that it takes a lot of work, time & patience, but what they give back, you can not buy for all the money in the world.
here's a photo essay of a walk with Lovely Lotus
Radi, I was just being flip. Of course children are wonderful and amazing.
I know you are an awesome mom.
ps-get them a dog!
Well let's see what job I wind up with first. The one I want most (and pays the worst -- of course-- if only I could be satisfied with a normal city/state government job) is community organizer for Congressional Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 in Arizona for Progressive Voter Network through the 2008 cycle -- I am not sure there will be time to get the kids watered and fed -- let alone a dog.. then again I might just wind up teaching high school for a year and then moving towards my M.A/PhD.

I absolutely hate being pet-free, but I have no choice. (Severe pet allergies.) So, I suppose you could say I like being pet-free, as the alternative would be making frequest visits to the ER... :-P

I love my animals, all of them. But I am intentionally letting the herd thin out.
I am now down to a gerbil, 3 guinea pigs and 2 cats. And though I love them, I don't love how they tie me down. I've had to turn down gigs out of town because I don't feel comfortable dumping the pets off on someone else (especially the guinea pigs, they're all rescues with health problems and couldn't be placed elsewhere because of it so they have pretty specific needs) and haven't pursued touring productions because I don't like the idea of my brother or someone else having to take over my responsibilities for a year or two while I go cavorting around the country....though it's getting harder and harder, I really want to spend some time touring dammit!
