Who slaps a toddler?!
#25Who slaps a toddler?!
Posted: 2/16/13 at 4:56amI don't know. I've taken my son out to dinner and been complimented by other diners on how well behaved he is. I've never felt the need to hit him other than a swat on the bottom if he does something that is a danger to him. I've never even felt the need to put him in "time out' He's just a good kid. I know - everyone says that about their own kid but he's always so respectful to his friends' parents - I swear they would adopt him. However, he's 9. He's not a toddler. Toddlers are still trying to figure out their place in the world. They haven't figured out how to behave yet. If someone had slapped my son when he was a toddler I would have totally gone postal on them.

This story is behind disturbing...this man (and I am using that term loosely) struck someone else's child - an innocent, defenseless baby who didn't know any better...and to add insult to injury verbally attacks the child as well!
I seriously question this man's sanity...and I don't understand why he's getting off with nothing more than a mere slap on the wrist.

Sanity has nothing to do with it. The guy was drunk. They said he reeked of alcohol when he got on the plane and drank throughout the flight.
Of course the guy says he only had one drink....
I'm agree with those who think a child deserves a good swat when they've earned it. But, no mater how much I hate kids, I would never want to see you called the N word and slapped by a stranger.
I probably would have gone postal as well.

Posted: 2/16/13 at 10:30amOh he was drunk...I overlooked that part...so I stand corrected. But yet and still what he did was wrong. He needs to lay off the alcohol...he's obviously an ugly, sloppy drunk.

We had a local story recently about a postal worker who, well, went postal, and choked a girl for laughing at him.
Later, he said he was having a really bad day.
You think?!

Oh lord that literally made me laugh out loud!
I had a vision of this postal worker with his hands around that poor girl's neck throttling her back and forth!

I guess he mistakenly walked into the ladies restroom in a public area. The girls were laying at him and calling him 'stupid'. He snapped.
But some kids make you want to do that.

Posted: 2/16/13 at 11:47amAt my theater once, in the lobby, some small children were kicking the glass panels on the doors. The mothers were oblivious as to what their children were doing. I made the awful mistake of telling the kids not to kick the glass. Well THEN the mothers were at full alert as they told me to mind my own business and don't dare tell their children what to do, as THEY will tell their children what to do. I give up!

It's not OK to verbally abuse anyone.
It's not OK to physically assault anyone.
It's not OK to use alcohol as an excuse.
Add to the equation that this is a child and I'm doubly disgusted by this story.
This thread got a bit off topic but I have my opinions on bad parenting too. I'd like to take some of you with the shorter reserves of patience to work with me sometime so you can meet my caseload of parents :)

Found the story about the mailman

Posted: 2/16/13 at 8:56pmJane, that is definitely on the mothers. If Henry was kicking the glass, I would have applauded you for saying something if I didn't know he was doing it. But I would hope I would have been paying enough attention to him that I would have seen it myself.
#36Who slaps a toddler?!
Posted: 2/16/13 at 10:00pmYes, I said in another thread that the reason I don't like kids is the parents. During the 10 years I worked in a theater that always had children's shows, I came across literally thousands of children and their mothers. You probably wouldn't believe the amount of parents who paid no attention to their kids. At least half. Little kids would be running around the lobbies of the complex screaming (while shows were going on), shouting, falling, opening backstage doors, playing around construction sites, jumping on the escalators and walking up or down them the opposite way, etc. And don't dare scold them!

Jane, these mothers are the ones who grew up with the pass/fail system. With the concept that everyone should win a prize because everyone was special. Of course when they have kids they will carry that forward. "I am special therefore my child is doubly special!". I live in a building filled with young parents. Every one of these children are "Special, God's gifts to the world". So what if the building rules say no bicycle riding or scootering in the hallways, because my child is the exception to the rule, being so special". I don't blame the kids for that. I hold the parents responsible.
In January, I flew back from a short vacation in Miami. Seated next to me was a young Mom and her child, probably around 4. As soon as the plane started moving the child began to scream kick and throw things. The mother, when he did this would draw him close in a loving embrace, kiss and hug him and sing sweetly to him... Rewarding bad behavior much? He would quiet down and when he wanted attention would repeat the same behaivor. He got the same reward. At one point she handed him a bottle with apple juice. A bottle at 4? He took to sips and hurled it and actually broke the little TV in front of my seat! What was his punishement? She drew him near, sang songs to him and caressed him. This continued non stop from Miami to New York. We were the seat in row in the bulk head just behind first class. The passengers there kept giving ME dirty looks as if I were the kid's father or Grandfather! I do not blame the child but the mother for lack of parenting skills! I was more inclined to slap her!

Where's that British nanny when you need her? I like that broad. No nonsense result driven, kindhearted, follow through type parenting.

I totally agree with the parents assessment. I went to a show with my 3 sisters in December that was aimed at children mostly. I made comments about starting the show late and how people should learn consequences of being late. My 1 sister, who used to be a teacher, said "Do you want to deal with a bunch of pissed off parents?" Then afterwards I commented about people talking, including adults, and she again pulled the kids card.
I know I'm younger than many people in this thread, but even I knew to be quiet and behave at a movie or anywhere else like that. My parents never had to tell me to be quiet or stop doing something disruptive. Then again, maybe I was really happy to see a movie or something.

"Judicial corporate punishement works"
As Elizabeth Warren is making perfectly clear this week, the Justice Dept. has been asleep at the wheel of judicial corporate pun.....
Oh, you mean judicious corporal punishment.
Nevermind.

I want to throw my support on the side of those who believe in a little swat every now and again. But this story horrified me when I first read it.
Babies cry on flights. Is it annoying? Sure but it's something that can't always be avoided. No need to embarrass the mother any more than she already is. Not only did this man hit a stranger's child (who was not misbehaving) but he used enough force to draw blood. No matter what an adult should never hit a child hard enough to draw blood. Plus he used that disgusting word. He deserves every negative thing that comes out of this for him. I know children who can control their impulses better.

Posted: 2/18/13 at 11:02amI'm so happy he lost his job. I hope he is never employed again and sinks to the lowest despair imaginable for a scumbag like him.

This situation isn't even a case of a child misbehaving. This child was in pain. The plane's altitude changed...he is a toddler...the effect of that cause him pain and discomfort and he started crying...and even if that child had been misbehaving it is the parent's responsibility on how they choose to discipline their child not some random stranger off the street.
This man has just disgraced himself. He was out of line and had no right to strike someone else's child. I don't care if he had one drink, I don't care if he had twenty. He had no right whatsoever.
He should have thought twice before he lifted his hand up to strike the child and he is reaping the consequences of the choice he made to hit that child.

All of the above. I generally don't agree with people being fired for what they do on their own time, but this is an obvious exception. This guy needs help - and jail time.
