I mean, Biden himself said poor kids are just as bright and talented as white kids. So who was he referring to the poor kids as then?

It’s not so much that most of us adore Biden, but that we realize he might be our best hope to beat Trump. Say what you will, but the largest voting blocks are demographics that are more likely to vote for Biden. Progressive candidates just aren’t as likely to engage a significant portion of those voters. Yes, progressives will be happy with Sanders or Warren, but certainly not Republicans that don’t like Trump and we need some of those. And younger progressives just don’t show up at the polls in large enough numbers. Even in 2008 and 2012, they didn’t show up in the numbers you’d expect. In 2016, lots of liberal people spent just as much time dissing Hillary as they did Trump. That was not helpful. Everyone is entitled to have their favorite candidates, but anyone who doesn’t want 4 more years of Trump needs to make very clear they WILL UNEQUIVOCALLY AND ENTHUSIASTICALLY VOTE FOR WHOEVER THE EVENTUAL DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE WILL BE. I’d vote for Kermit the Frog if he’s the nominee. Ditto Miss Piggy, Fozzie the bear, or Beaker!

The polls (and yes, I know how wrong they can be) consistently show that only Biden has a shot at beating Trump in the general election. That’s because he appeals to just enough moderates & undecideds & independents to win over Trump. Polls consistently show Warren/Sanders losing to Trump. Those key demographics will never vote for them. Same for the rest of the field including Mayor Pete.

I honestly am not optimistic about any Democratic candidate winning the White House in 2020. Our party is too splintered. The extreme left will only vote for very progressive candidates. The centrists and moderates will only vote for moderate centrist candidates. So if they don’t like the nominee, they’ll either stay home, vote third party, or (god forbid) in some cases vote for Trump. I so so hope I’m wrong, but I think this is going to be 2016 all over again.

Who knows? Election is a year away and we’ll see what transpires between now and then.

Warren seems to be losing some steam, mostly to Buttigieg & Yang. Biden seems back in the lead. Harris has disappeared. Half of the field needs to drop out already (still 17 running).

Yeah, I don’t know what Bloomberg is thinking. There’s already too many people in the field and he has no chance of winning primaries except maybe in New York. It’s my impression that Warren is still going strong. I could see her winning the nomination, but I don’t think she has a chance of beating Trump. That’s not because I don’t like her. I like many things about her, but it’s pretty clear the most progressive candidates will not attract the demographics we need to swing our way if we have any hope of winning back the White House. Those demographics are moderate and centrist Republicans and Democrats, independents, undecideds and those who voted for Trump in 2016 and now regret it but won’t vote for someone who they see as a socialist. We ignore these groups at our peril. The reality is all the candidates are aligned on most of the issues. They just differ on policies to address those issues. So it really comes down to who you think can best hold the office, but most importantly who can actually win against Trump.

If Biden wins the nomination, the never-Biden liberals (similar to 2016’s Bernie Bros) could be the reason Trump wins again similar to the many people in 2016 who stayed home or voted third party or (ugh) voted for Trump rather than vote for Hillary. I don’t understand why it’s so hard for Democrats and liberals to understand that it’s totally fine (in fact, encouraged) to passionately support your favorite candidate before and during the primaries, but once we have our nominee we should all support and vote for him/her in the general election. Even if it’s a moderate. Even if it’s a socialist Democrat. Even if it’s a woman or gay man. That last sentence saddens me, but I do believe there’s a sizable portion of the United States isn’t ready to vote for a woman (one of many reasons Hillary lost) or especially a gay man even if they won’t admit it. As long as our party remains splintered, I have 5 sobering words for you: Four More Years of Trump. And if we still remain splintered after that: Eight Years of Pence. Surely it’s a small trade off to support the eventual payoff if it means avoiding that.

To say I’m pessimistic about the election a year from now would be an understatement. I’ve never wanted to be wrong so badly.

The candidates in general should have stayed away from health care and especially Medicare for all. Their platforms should have focuses on how much Trump is an embarrassment globally and how the US needs to restore its dignity and relationships with other foreign leaders. I would have left health care alone until one of them was elected.

If Pete is our guy, we will lose very badly. I love my party, but goddamnit are we disorganized as hell most of the time. This whole thing is such a mess, and we need the strongest person to just get Rump OUT. We can make an awesome political statement with Pete later, he's only 37 years old. He has time. They need to get their s h i t together quickly, no one can deal with another 4 years of this horror.

To me, at this point Pete is the safest vote for a victory. We can see in Lousiana, Kentucky, Virginia, that Democrats are winning. Now that we're winning at a state level we need to continue that to the national level. I love and support Warren and Bernie on their policies but I am not sure either are electable right now. It seems like since 2018, the majority of major elections have gone Democrat, so the voter base does seem to truly be anti-Trump.

Now, we just need the candidate that pisses off the least amount of democrats, far left and not, and who pisses off people in the center the least. To me it seems to be Pete. I like his entire point being "This election is about getting Donald Trump out of office, not any single issue" and thats what it comes down to for me at this point. Its going to take A LOT to change from Trump, but going from the radical right to the radical left might not be the best thing for this country overall.

God, we're just in a mess right now aren't we.

Pete has ZERO African American support. Zero. So, no, he won't win the nomination.

There's such a huge disconnect between the different factions of the Democratic Party right now. I go on Reddit (mostly young, mostly male, mostly white) and it's basically Bernie Sanders or bust over there. Posts in support of Bernie get tens of thousands of upvotes. There's even animosity towards Warren for not being liberal enough. I and most of my friends are generally in the Reddit demographic, and Bernie has probably the best buzz among the Gen X and Millennial liberals I know.

Then I come here, or talk to older Democrats, and they're deathly afraid that Bernie is too far left to court moderates (possibly true, though polls show Bernie is quite competitive with Trump. But they aren't particularly passionate about any of the candidates, and if THEY aren't enthused about most of the candidates, younger voters most CERTAINLY aren't going to show up to the polls. As we saw in 2008 and 2012, the Millennial vote is a crucial linchpin on the left for Election Day. Biden is indeed ahead of the other candidates in most polls, but if he fails to ignite the Millennial vote, like Obama did, we may see Trump again in 2020.

I think liberals really need to stop fixating on 2020 and think of a long-term contingency plan should Trump win again for dealing with climate change, healthcare reform, and income inequality over the next decade.
