One was a producer and the other a composer, why would they be rivals? And even if Maxwell had passed on CATS it's ALW's show so its not like ALW profited off of his mistake. Could someone explain it to me if I'm missing something or is it just a mistake? I love the show, but this has always just been a pet peeve of mine that I never understood
Poetic licence? Because it sounded good? It wasn't real!
Because ALW is a well known British theatrical personality that American audiences recognize.
Charles Shaugnessy is effin sexy.
Who cares? It always made for some funny bits.
Niles: "The children say they won't come down until they find out how many nominations Andrew Lloyd Webber got."
Maxwell: "I got five...and he got two!!!!"
I remember the episode about the musical Mr. Sheffield made based on Fran's Yetta. It felt heavy on the Streisand filmography.

Because the correct comparison would be Cam Mac and he isn't nearly as prolific as ALW?

In addition to Lloyd Webber's name being recognizable as a musical theatre personality, he did found the Really Useful Group, which served as a producer on all of his shows, so in a manner of speaking he was a producer.
If SMASH couldn't be realistic in 2012, do you really think that SITCOM of the 90's would be?
All the above reasons are correct....recognition, humor, it wasn't THAT wrong (RUG), they were both British and it was fiction.

In addition to being head of Really Useful Group, ALW also owns(ed) several West End theaters. So he can be considered a producer and a rival of Sheffield.
I also wouldn't discount the fact that in the mid-90s, ALW was without question the most high-profile theatrical figure in the world. The average TV watcher in the Midwest probably wouldn't have any idea who Cameron MacIntonish was/is, but they would surely know Andrew Lloyd Webber.
