I am so disgusted....in todays Desert Sun is a whole article on the World Cup, and the various cities the games are in, and what there is to see there. Now, Munich is my second favorite city after Rome, and I have been to Munich many times.
Here is what is listed:
Alte Pinothek (I totally agree)
Glockenspiel (I agree but the description was "statues that move")
and.....AND....Hofbrauhaus.....EEK, WHAT CRAP IS THIS? Why would I go to a restaurant with BAD food, and filled with American and Japanese tourists pretending to be Germans???? There are so many better restaurants.
What about these sites:
Frauenkirche
Residenz
Marienplatz
Asam Kirche (how could ANYONE miss this?)
Englischer Garten
The four "tors" to the city
Nymphenburg
Schleissheim (the three palaces, old, new, and Lustheim)
Church of St. Peter (one of the best views of the city at the top)
Tomb of Ludwig II (in St. Michels)
Dallmayr (nothing like getting lunch and taking it outside)
and for those interested:
Olympic Staium and Village
BMW World HQ
Bavarian Air Museum (next to Schleissheim)
Hofbrau house? HAH!

Elphaba, you're fantastic. If I ever travel around Germany, I'll make sure to ask you for tips on what sights to visit!

yessica, please do. I spent three years in the Army there, and would be happy to give you some ideas.
It seems that people around the world think of beer and Sauerkraut when thinking of Germany... But is that news?
Sad, but true.
And Yessica, if you ever travel around Germany, come visit me! *g*

lol, GuyfromGermany, let's face it: even Germans think about that when thinking of Germany
Well... okay... yes... but... Sauerkraut actually isn't THAT tasty, is it?
Couldn't there be something nicer connected with Germany?

You can't eat Goethe, Schiller or Brecht, can you?
But then how about Lübecker Marzipan?
Oh my... I almost wrote "Or Mozartkugeln!"
I guess I'm a little confused today.

If that's you in your avatar, I definitely will
My favorite story is that of a few friends of mine who had just arrived in Germany (they are an American military family) and were looking for "real" Germans. They went to a carnival and spottet some in traditional German Lederhosen and tried to ask them if they could take a picture with them in German. The "real" Germans, turned around with a confused look and said: "Ich bin Amerikaner,... English bitte?

Or another friend of mine, whose husband is in the airforce. When she learned that she'll be moving to Germany for a bit she went out to buy 20 new pairs of jeans, because she didn't think they sold stuff like that over here...
yuck sauerkraut.....however rotkraut, or blaukraut depending if you are north or south is heaven.
Mozart balls are nasty.....
but the ABSOLUTE best
LEBERKAS!!!!!!!!!!!! at the Victualienmarkt in Munich

well, praise to them that they tried it in German at least. I didn't find it a common thing that all English language tourists would communicate abroad in the indigenous language.
Ahaha, that's a great story!
And yes, that's me in my avatar. I thought since almost everyone on this thread has a picture of himself as his avatar, I should follow... *g*

You know what they don't sell in the States? Kohlrabi, they don't have it anywhere...
...my mom made some last night, cause she knows how deprived I was..
now that's a scary thought yessica, but I am more than happy to suggest places to visit in Europe.......

Wow, where is that? That's pretty.
Edit: I know scary stuff...Let me just say there are very few scenarios that could make me want to return to the South of the States after having lived in Atlanta for a year...

Back from the Kitchen - NOT with Sauerkraut.
Hasn't your hometown got a website, Guyfromgermany? There should be pictures
the Charles Bridge in Prague. The last six days of our July trip are there. A very beautiful city, and some of the friendliest people in Europe.
When I was there in 1998 we were standing on the Charles Bridge looking at a map, and a businessman came up and asked where we were trying to go. He showed us on the map where to go, AND suggested a wonderful restaurant nearby (Klub Architecto). I was not used to that.
