Seems like what we heard at the inauguration was a recorded version. Those nearby the musicians heard them playing live, but a recorded version was broadcast.

That's excellent! This means there are nice clean studio recordings of this out there. It's only a matter of time before they're mine! Bwahahaha! I hope they took the same precautions with Sunday's concert performances.

Fake music for a fake president.
I don't follow, Goth.
How are the music and the president fake?
Goth, are you referring to the flubs during Obama's swearing in? if so, he re-took the Oath on Wednesday to make it totally official. He really didn't have to, but did as a precaution.
Or merely to the fact that he's a Democrat?
I think people like Goth relish in their bitterness. Must be very lonely though. He doesn't sound like a fun person to be around.
I was wondering if that was the case - it was too cold for them to have their good instruments outside, and I can't even imagine trying to play in the cold.
.........but he's dead, so we'll never know the answer now, will we?
There was an article about Yo Yo Ma's plan to play a carbon fiber cello, due to the cold.
I was surprised to see a regular cello. I guess it wasn't as cold as they thought it was going to be. Even if the broadcast used a pre-recording, they were apparently playing live as well.
I read that the concern was with being able to ensure that all the instruments stayed tuned properly in the low temps.
"It was too cold for the cello, violin and Anthony McGill's clarinet to hold true pitch, according to Carole Florman, a spokeswoman for the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, and Gabriela Montero's piano could not hold its tune for more than two hours under those conditions."
"This isn't Milli Vanilli," Florman said, with an allusion to the pop group once stripped of a Grammy Award for lip-syncing. "They had to perform in such cold weather, the instruments couldn't possibly be in tune. They were able to play in sync with the tape. It's not unusual."
Yo-Yo Ma or Memorex? Both, actually

It's funny--I was wondering--completely randomly--if it was possible that it was pre recorded.
I was wondering if the broadcast used a recording as well. With all the visible wind, no interference was picked up on the microphones. Doesn't matter. They were still playing live anyway.
Hey, if it's good enough for Britney...
