I forgot to add Max Von Sydow to my supporting actor snubs. He gave a terrific performance.
As good as Julie Christie is in "Away From Her," is it wrong for me to be secretly pulling for Laura Linney?

after just seeing Michael Clayton I am so surprised and angry that it got a best picture nod over Into the Wild. I saw nothing special there, nothing overly interesting, and nothing overly great. Save for Tom Wilkinson I thought the acting was subpar and that Tilda Swinton was nothing special.
That being said, I really really believe Into the Wild is much more deserving in the Best Picture Category. And how it was not nominated for cinematography or song is just beyond me.

INTO THE WILD should have been nominated for more (especially for "Guaranteed") but I do think that CLAYTON is an overall better crafted film.
#28re: Your Final Oscar Predictions
Posted: 2/20/08 at 10:18pmreally? why do you say that? I don't think the director elicited any great performances (again except for Tom Wilkinson who i believe is exceptional in everything) and I do understand that Michael Clayton is a "director's" film, but for me, even in craftmanship, it was mediocre...

Hm...I'm sorry you didn't like it.
I just felt that it was incredibly original and strong. Every element is in place and couldn't be better. A throwback to films of the 70's. Watch it again - it took me 2 viewings to really, really get everything.
#30re: Your Final Oscar Predictions
Posted: 2/20/08 at 11:12pmAgreed, munk. Hollywood rarely turns out good legal dramas, let alone ones that also work as thrillers. Michael Clayton is as shrewd and sharp as they come.

Ray, I'd love to see Amy Ryan get the Oscar! She was phenomenal; her portrayal of a Southie woman was spot on. I saw it with my friend who has lived in Boston her whole life, and she could not believe that Amy Ryan isn't from Boston.

Posted: 2/23/08 at 12:15pmI'd been a big supporter of Julie's all along, but now that I've seen La Vie en Rose, I can't help but sway my vote to Marion. I think she might just be the big upset of the evening.
#43re: Your Final Oscar Predictions

I do too, Princeton78. Marion could easily win Best Actress, and I wouldn't be surprised. I do think Julie has the edge for total votes, but it CAN'T be by much.
Supporting Actress is the real "wonky" one, IMO. Votes could split all over the place and it's anyone's award. I think Blanchett will get it, but Dee, Swinton or Ryan could easily walk away with it. And if they ALL split the votes, that girl from "Atonement" could even win it!

Exactly, B12B.
The Supporting Actress category has no real locks at all. It could easily go 3 different ways. But since Leading and Supporting Actor seem to be "take it to the bank and bet on it" locks, the Leading Actress category seems ripe for a huge upset, and frankly, though I enjoyed Christie, I'd jump out of my seat if Page or Cotillard were to win.
Also of note, the screen writing, directing and Best Picture awards also all seem to be locks, again, leaving Best Actress as the only category where an upset could occur, and we rarely have an Oscar night without at least one WTF moment.

I loved Juno and all the performances in it. However, I don't consider any of them oscar-worthy. Not even Page's. I'm more impressed when the role is a stretch.
If Page is such a strong actress, we'll see plenty more of her. She's got her whole life ahead of her.
P.S. I'm watching Little Miss Sunshine again right now, and I actually think Abigail Breslin's performance was more oscar worthy than Ellen Page's.

I adored Page's performance in JUNO but it isn't nearly her best performance to date, she should have been nominated (and perhaps won, can't remember which year she would have classified for) for the chilling, haunting performance she gave in HARD CANDY opposite the highly underrated Patrick Wilson.
Either way, it's her I'm gonna be rooting tomorrow night even if she has no chance of taking the award home.
I think Christie has the slight edge over Cotillard at this point, just slight though.
