The only one of us to officially predict Cotillard was broadway86. WELL DONE!
I am thrilled beyond belief for her. The SECOND her name was announced, I started crying! It's the first time I have ever gotten emotionally invested in an Oscar winner. I still can't believe it. Her performance is astounding.

Posted: 2/25/08 at 12:34amI would be upset except that Julie Christie does have hers for "Darling".

Cotillard's performance was indeed fabulous but I think Christie's quiet, nuanced, heart-wrenching performance as Fiona should have won. Either way, it is a case in which one cannot say that it was undeserved by any means even if my preferred choice didn't win.
Plus, how can you be upset when Cotillard appeared so humbled, shocked, moved, and excited by the recognition? Congratulations Marion Cotillard, you're not even signed up for NINE yet and I'm already rooting for you for the 2010 Academy Awards!

lol Thanks. I woke up this morning and I was convinced that, against the odds, Swinton and Cotillard would win.

Agreed. Still, I was happy for Marion.

Posted: 2/25/08 at 2:45pmAs brilliant as Christie was, her performance didn't touch me and pulverize me like Cotillard's did. The scene where she runs around her apartment screaming "Marcel!" is some of the FINEST acting ever committed to screen.

Merci! I may have won it, but I still missed two of the acting awards, and then got lucky in some of the other categories.
I'm surprised, because as much as I love the Oscars, I don't usually win any pools.
So... where's the money, honey?
ONE MILLION DOLLARS is the kitty, right?

Oddly enough, switch the names and you have my thoughts. I swear, there were times when Christie would look into Pinsent's eyes and you can instantly see how little she remembers about their life together. Anyone can cry and scream and throw ****, but THAT is genius.

In a performance filled with good moments, this is probably one of my least favorites... Is that bad? I preferred the scene around the piano ("That is me! That is my life!").

I thought both Marion and Julie gave outstanding performances.
Julie's "drama" was on the inside. That's where she was "throwing things." It was an internal performance, and absolutely perfect.
Without getting too self-pitying here, I have a very close relative who is suffering from severe dementia right now. And I can tell you that there wasn't a false move in Christies' performance. Not one. I have seen those expressions myself. I know the confusion, the fear, the pain, the sense of loss, the disconnect at times. It was all in her incredible face, and those eyes. She was completely brilliant, but it was a subtle turn.
Marion Cotillard gave an external performance, equally brilliant. Her afflictions were all physical. Even the emotional ones were "worn on her sleeve" for all the world to see. She was playing a very theatrical woman, who electrified many an audience. It was a showy performance, but it was fierce and indelible. And she nailed it from start to finish.

Same here. We lost her last year. I agree that every single nuance in Christie's performance was dead on.
Don't get me wrong, I thought Cotillard was very good and very riveting. As far as emotional continuity with her character and character development, the movie's middle finger to chronology didn't help her performance at all. I think I'm one of the few who really didn't like the movie itself.

I posted a similar thought on another thread, but I'll say it again here.
I thought Christie and Cotillard were both brilliant and deserving, and though Christie's performance certainly haunted me, after watching a close relative die after a battle with Alzheimer's, I always was aware that I was watching Julie Christie.
With Cotillard, I had to constantly remind myself that I wasn't watching Edith Piaf, and thus, my vote this year went to Cotillard.

I was aware that Fiona looked like Julie Christie. In real life, they're give off a totally different vibe.
As for Cotillard, I could argue that the heavy make-up helped a bit, but I'm really glad that you guys were moved by her performance.

Posted: 2/26/08 at 1:42pmOf course the makeup helped, but Cotillard underwent a COMPLETE transformation. When I saw LA VIE EN ROSE, I didn't know who Marion Cotillard was. I then saw an interview with her, and I couldn't believe it was the same woman. Not just because of looks. A complete transformation.

Posted: 2/26/08 at 2:07pmSigh. I still wish they had tied. Both were brilliant in very different ways, as best pointed out.

I think it's unfair to say that you could "see" Julie Christie. As Besty pointed out, her performance was so internal. The reason I thought Christie deserved the award over Cotillard is the same reason I didn't think Mirren should have won last year, physical performances that heavily rely on make-up and impressions to impersonate and act like a historic figure. Just my personal opinion.
Yes, I am aware that it's more than "impersonation" and whatnot, but I just feel that what Christie did, creating this character from scratch, and nailing every gesture, look, and line was more deserving.
Yet, one can't say that Cotillard's award was undeserved, her performance was indeed thrilling and I bought her as a confused teenager, bought her as a love-struck woman, and as a sick older artist. I am looking forward to seeing a lot more from her... will NINE come out already?

Six of the eight Best Actress winners this decade won for playing real people.
Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Helen Mirren and Marion Cotillard.
Oscar just loves that I guess.

Posted: 2/26/08 at 6:12pmYour post reminded me, Priest of what I consider the greatest oscar travesty of all- Julia Roberts as Erin Brokovich winning best actress over Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream. There's a case where artistry didn't prevail.

I see. Well, Burstyn's performance for me transcended almost any that I've ever seen by anyone, so I'm biased!

I actually enjoyed Roberts
And both Kate Winslet and Will Smith (and I'm sure a handful of other actors) have said that the best way to get an Oscar is to either 1.Play a real person, 2.Play someone with a mental/physical handicap. Now the Oscar is REALLY yours if you play a combination of both.
