Shirley's line about Anne Hathaway having a lovely voice and "keep singing" must have been an ad lib, don't you think? I loved it.

Certainly seemed like Shirley threw in her own thoughts on Hathaway's singing, which was very impressive. I would not at all mind seeing Hathaway and Jackman in a movie musical. I know Jackman is lined up for a remake of Carousel, but does anyone else think he'd make a great Lawrence in a movie of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (is he too young?)? I could see him as Lawrence, Hathaway as Christine, Jack Black as Freddie, Megan Mullally as Muriel, and Kevin Kline as Andre. I'd also have Kate Shindle as Jolene.

I haven't read the thread so I don't know whether most people liked the show or not, but IMO it was a train wreck.

The opening number was.....ill conceived. WTF was that futuristic dancing for The Reader. Jackman was winning and I loved Hathaway, but I was waiting for Rob Lowe to come out dancing with Snow White.

The 5 previous winners announcing the nominees seemed more like a tribunal than an honor.

Best parts (again IMO):
Beyonce - girl's got glamour, no doubt about it.

Steve Martin and Tina Fey - side-splitting.

Ben Stiller - pitch perfect imitation

Best Foreign Film - the evenings only surprise

The auditorium being done up like a night club - cool

The guy who wrote Milk (looks like Jamie Bell, no?) gave an impassioned speech. Very moving.

Agreed with everything but the five previous winners thing. For the first time, it really did seem like an Honor to be Nominated. I can't imagine how wonderful it was for each nominee to hear those tributes.

Why was there a clip from BRAVEHEART, one of the most offensively homophobic movies ever made, inserted into the Best Picture montage for MILK?

To rub Mel Gibson's face it in. "Look at these movies about HEROES! Harvey Milk! William Wallace! Ghandi! Harvey Milk Again!"

I Squealed when the montage rolled. I would have loved to see Mel squirm.

Oh! I forgot to mention my favorite part:

Franco and Rogen laughing themselves silly at The Reader and Doubt.
Then inviting Kaminsky to watch with them.

My post didn't show up on my computer, so here's what I wrote:

I thought the show in general was better than the ones in recent memory. The stage was absolutely stunning, with the Swarovski curtains. The entire theater looked like a retro nightclub. Just gorgeous.

The opening number was excellent, with its spoof on low budget (please!). Anne can sing!

A highlight for me was Ben Stiller doing Joaquin Pheonix on David Letterman. Perfect!

I was happy with most of the major awards except for Slumdog, which I didn't care for.

I was thrilled that Sean Penn and Dustin Lance Black won. MILK was by far my favorite film of 2008, followed closely by WALL-E and Benjamin Button. And their speeches were the most moving ones of the night.

I didn't see the Reader, but as a Winslet fan, I'm happy. Meryl can do no wrong, and I would have been happy to see her win as well.

I thought Slumdog was a really good movie, but yeah, it didn't deserve all those accolades. I would have given it score and maybe adapted screenplay, but that's about it.

Finally, I loved the opening number. Hugh Jackson is so talented and likable.

I thought some of these "tributes" were excellent while others left me flat. I would have preferred a mixture of tributes and film clips.

Guess BRAVEHEART was included because it was a Best Picture winner.

And as for Jackman in DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS please NO! Granted he is charismatic, attractive, charming and an ultimate showman, but I can't be the only one who thinks his voice is like nails on chalkboard painful. Is it the tone? Accent? I don't know, but it reminded me again how much I wish there was a recording of Patrick Wilson's OKLAHOMA! I do think Kevin Kline could make an excellent Lawrence.

Rest in peace, Iflitifloat.

"I do think Kevin Kline could make an excellent Lawrence."

Without doubt.

But, why?
