theatrebabe - REM sings Night Swimming.
My vote is Don't Take the Girl by Tim McGraw. That's also one of the best songs I've heard.

It's about a father and a son and the father isn't around, and when the son grows up he ends up just like his father. It's like, "We'll get together then, dad, you know we'll have a good time then." or something.

boytobroadway...no mention of "Me and A Gun"? Or maybe "Hey Jupiter"?
A few Idina Menzel songs come to my mind. "You'd Be Surprised," especially. Though her original arrangement of that song is about 100 times more powerful then the one that ended up on her CD.
