re: the i love george thread

it's funny, shesings, i feel the same way about explaining to you that just about everybody who's involved in oil can be tied to one abother at some point, kinda like playing six degrees of kevin bacon, or the fact that the only way to possibly give the world hope for a future that doesn't involve lots of mushroom clouds and repeatedly hearing the words allah akbar was to change the status quo in the middle east and that's exactly what we did, but you're right, we're just on different wavelengths.

Papa - if Mr. Bush is the visionary of any century, it would be the 12th, not the 21st. And do you REALLY think we've 'changed the status quo' in the Middle East? We've disrupted a current run of events in a backward country that was allowing itself to be run by a dictator - but there's much more to the Middle East than that. Nothing of substance has changed in Saudi Arabia, and there has been the same back-and-forth/up-and-down movement in the Israeli situation as always. That doesn't even begin to address other 'big leaguers' like Iran. You say you support him because you know where he comes from. Where I see him coming from is a place of anti-intellectual theocentrism - and that makes me run away, not toward an embrace.

re: the i love george thread

mushroom clouds ... are we implying weapons of mass destruction? the ones that didn't exist? they ones that weren't being developed? yep, I'm SURE glad that so many people had to give up their lives for that ... totally worth while. I know I definatly feel better about the future of our country now that I know for certain that Iraq isn't doing a d**m thing to try and harm us.

And I do understand that everyone in the oil industry are probably connected, like any other industry. Maybe we should just keep those people out of office since they're also linked to terrorism. I'm looking forward to the ketchup industry taking priority in our country. You know those Heinz people ... they're pretty dangerous.

nah, i'm not implying that iraq had wmds, i didn't think they really had anything of note other than some folks with knowledge of how to get them up and running, but after 9/11 it wasn't worth taking the chance that they might. i was looking more at the middle east in general and iran in particular in that if iraq can manage to work, it will put enormous pressure on iran as a successful place across the border will push the millions there who want reform over the edge. while iran is close to having a nuke, israel will never let that happen, but sometimes ya just have to break the bowl to make progress. status quo and the un got us 9/11, the world trade center 1, the cole, somalia, the khobar towers, the embassy bombings while iraq and afghanistan got us libya turning over a new leaf. sitting around and hoping things got better was not an option.

re: the i love george thread

Maybe after 9/11 we should have focused more on taking action against the people who actually were responisble for it. Not taking action against Iraq actually WAS an option since they were in no way involved. We're just using tragic events and using them as a reason to settle old scores. And if you're not implying that Iraq was a threat to us b/c of WMD ... then what was the mushroom cloud statement about?

The only thing I like about GW is that he proves the statement that any idiot can grow up and be president.
But for the most part I view him as a living example of why abortions should always be legal. The world would be a better place without him.

Papa - For years, no one was 'sitting around' - there has been US involvement (usually corporate) and US intervention (usually military) in the Middle East ever since oil was discovered - and especially since Israel was established. To not even entertain the idea of our culpability in this morass is the height of narcissistic arrogance. And frankly, it's the veneer of that very thing that makes Mr. Bush and his cronies so abhorant to many people.

re: the i love george thread

the mushroom cloud comment was the threat of islamo-fascists getting nukes. the only way to keep that from happening is to give the people there some hope. taking out a guy as nasty as saddam goes a long way towards doing that. you should read what the iraqi bloggers are saying, it's quite different from what you hear on the networks.

re: the i love george thread

I have no doubt that many prefer life without Saddam at the helm - but walk me through, please, how this is supposed to change the Middle East in general - other than the threat of the US coming in to change what is not acceptable to them?
#42

re: the i love george thread

Just as we do here, the people of the middle east have many differing opinions. It's is not as if 100% of the people there consider the US to be bloodthirsty tyrants.

Many people see that the Iraqi's were excused of their genocidal madman, and realize that such a thing could in fact happen to them, too.

This is a very mass media opinion that many of you tout.

re: the i love george thread

I do agree that Saddam should be out of power. I don't agree with the method we took to go about doing it. Quite frankly he wasn't doing anything to us so why do we care. What about working on the defecit and all of the Americans without health care instead of "fixing" Iraq? What gives us the right to go in and take over a country? Perhaps if they had done something to us ... but they hadn't, nor had they threatened to, so what the h*ll were we thinking? Sticking up for daddy.
"or the fact that the only way to possibly give the world hope for a future that doesn't involve lots of mushroom clouds " - what was the point in even using that as your rationilization, if it wasn't even an issue that proved itself to be true? Because Iran may have been close?!? Well we weren't in Iran so I don't see how its pertinent. It's a scare tactic. Looks like you learned a lot from your beloved pres.

a sovereign secular government in iraq that manages to dance the line of still allowing islam its due (which is what sistani has been asking for as long as it respects the shia majority) and affording its people possibilities and hope can act as an example to people living in abject poverty under autocratic governments that they need not do so. when your cousin has a job and the ability to complain out loud about his leaders without dear of death or worse, wherever he lives and how he lives is going to start to look pretty good to you. remember, it was a people's revolution that established the theocracy in iran.

re: the i love george thread

Saddam stunk. I know that quite well, thanks- I was living in Israel during the Gulf War. It may have been a "video game war" to the U.S., but we were the ones dealing with bomb sirens and gas masks and Scuds.

But attacking Iraq was quite possibly the worst choice Bush could have made. If he absolutely had to choose some country full of dark-skinned people to bomb, just so he could feel manly, why didn't he choose a country that's actually sponsored terrorism against the U.S. lately? I'm pretty sure Iran and Syria qualify.

But no...Bush had to be an idiot and choose a country that hadn't sponsored terrorism against the U.S. since 1993, and was oil-rich. Just so that we would look like asses all around. And on top of that, he had to do it while we were already heavily engaged in Afghanistan? Do people even talk about the fact that there are still problems in Afghanistan, and that too many troops that should be there have been diverted to Iraq? The Bush Administration committed to rebuilding that country, and they've gone back on that.

Very good, Mr. President. Nice job.

re: the i love george thread

I know for a fact that there are many in the Middle East who are thankful and very grateful for what has ocurred. I would prefer not to have my views or opinions dismissed as if they are being fed to me. Where I diverge from what appears to be a very popular position is that I DO NOT feel it is our right nor resposibility to be interferring with these processes. Would that the blacks in the late 1800's in this country had had some mitigating outside force to step in and demand how things were going to be done. You cannot thrust idealogical viewpoints onto a society - as we in the gay community know all too well.

re: the i love george thread

You are right - there are many middle easterners who are grateful for our "assistance". But what about the multitude of middle-eastern pepole who aren't grateful? Are their opinions disqualified because we don't like them? As always there are 2 sides to every situation. I am so happy for the Iraqi citizens who feel their lives are safer and enriched b/c of this so called war. But it doesn't change the fact that we didn't need to be over there. There are many countires in the world which are living under corrupt situations. It just isn't the job of the us military to go fix them all. And if it is then why are we only focusing on Iraq?

re: the i love george thread

Hilariously (well, if you find human dismemberment funny), Bush was the one criticizing the Clinton administration for all the peacekeeping missions he sent troops out to do. "Clinton's overextending our troops," he said. "The U.S. isn't in the business of nation-building," he said.

HA!

re: the i love george thread

Papa - if I am understanding correctly, your idea is that the example of Iraquis finding a better life by getting rid of their tyrant would inspire other countries, who live under similar circumstances, to do the same thing. But it should be obvious that the Iraquis didn't accomplish this, the US military did. So unless the US military is going to take resonsibility for other overthrows, then all the inspiration in the world won't help them. Inspiration does not turn a pitchfork into a gun.
