Scarlett Johanssen will surely get some award recognition for Match Point.

re: Top 10 Films of 2005

Michael Bennett, when i saw Proof, on broadway, Jennifer jason Leigh gave a wonderful performance, with quite a bit fo subtlety. There was far too much that was obvious about the character from the very beginning in the movie (ie, in the movie i had no doubt, from the beginning she wasn't crazy and that she wrote the proof, in the play, both were things we couldn't be sure of til the end, and even then we couldn't necesarily trust what we knew).
when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change.

*bump*

Saw Walk the Line tonite--it was a nice film and all, but it did feel old hat after Ray. Joaquin is fantastic. And Reese is when she isn't playing Elle Woods. I thought the actress playing his first wife did a lovely job.

re: Top 10 Films of 2005

Zoneace, I disagree with you. In thr movie of Proof, I thought the addition of scenes with Catherine breaking down and saying she stole it from him PLUS moving the end of the scene in the garden (the point in the play where, no matter who is playing the role of Catherine, all doubt to her sanity and proof ownership was eradicated) to the end of the movie really muddied the waters where Catherine was concerned.

nd Reese is when she isn't playing Elle Woods.

Actually, I think she was amazing in that movie.

And, I know she's getting great reviews--and I loved her. Except in those couple of moments when she was Elle Woods. The scene where they are drunk on the stage comes to mind.

Oh, wait! I thought you meant that the only time she wasn't good was when she was playing Elle Woods. Literally. My bad.

Add The Constant Gardener to my Top...er...8? Actually, I think it might be my number 1. What a great film.

re: Top 10 Films of 2005

Constant Gardener is definitely one of my favorites of the year. Ralph Fiennes seems to have popped up in a lot of wonderful films recently (Gardener, Wallace and Gromit, Harry Potter). I'm anticipating The White Countess (Fiennes AND Natasha Richardson!).

Saw Brokeback Mountain. I respect Lee's ability to convey massive complexities in such a simplistic, straight forward manner of storytelling.

Brokeback Mountain was beautiful. I hated Memoirs of a Geisha. Seeing Mrs. Henderson Presents tonight.

re: Top 10 Films of 2005

Two supporting performances that should not be overlooked:

Collins in CAPOTE, whose final half hour in the film gives Hoffman something riveting and powerful to play off. Amy Adams in JUNE BUG. Adams' work made an indelible impression, a heartbreaking one. (But does anyone else remember the brilliant turn by Fenella Woolgar in BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS last year? Everyone forgot her, too.)

I'm in the minority--thought Keaner in CAPOTE is the most overrated. She's fine, yes. I thought the role simply too underwritten to register so strongly. but the critics adored her.

Saw Cinderella Man. Good film--rose above the stereotypical story. Paul Giamatti rocks. I may be rooting for him to win the Oscar. And, no matter what kind of person Crowe may or may not be, he is a good actor and HOT.

Some of you need to update your list and/or add your current lists! re: Top 10 Films of 2005

I seriously don't think 2005 was a good enough year for me to make a Top 10.
