Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Just got home from the preview--not gonna type a full review, cuz I'm going out. But...

In brief--

The show is excellent.
Audra is Christine Ebersole's biggest competition for the Tony. There's a reason Audra has four Tony awards already--and she shows why in 110. She is astounding.

Beautiful set. Beautiful direction from Lonny Price.
Bobby Steggert should and will get a Tony Nom for Featured Actor in a delightful performance as Jim.
EDIT:John Cullum is excellent, but doesn't have much to do.
It's already a tighter show than most of the things this year, and any minor kinks will be worked out. The crowd was on its feet before Audra came out--so that's very positive.

It's a simple story and it won't appeal to snobs who like their theatre epic and/or tragic and/or over the top.

I'm predicting it wins the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.

Excellent! I am quite excited to see this - though totally for Audra McDonald.

I'm seeing it on Sunday evening, I'm looking forward to it. I hope it's as good as jbdc says - Roundabout really needs to knock one out of the park this season.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. Oh, and this just in: "Pettiness, spite, malice ....Such ugly emotions... So sad." - After Eight, talking about MEEEEEEEE!!! I'm so honored! :-)

When I like something, I tend to be effusive with praise. I'd be interested to hear other opinions, as well.

I think it will win the Revival tony, b/c A Chorus Line did next to nothing new. A Chorus Line is fantastic, IMO, but 110 in the Shade is a fantastic, entirely NEW production.
EDIT: And I think Company won't hold up against 110.

For a multitude of reason, I wasn't really impressed. Audra of course is amazing, but she is Audra. However, for the second time this year, I sat there and wondered why Roundabout continues to choose shows that don't have good books or great scores. I felt like I really didn't care about anybody and that I was being slowly dragged through the first act. The show need to be tightened so that it doesn't run as long as it did. The first acts 90 minutes were so long. If there hadn't been a cute boy down the row, I realy don't know how I would have made it through. While there is some good acting, the show overall doesn't have much to offer in my opinion. I do agree though that it has a good chance at winning the Revival of a Musical Tony, but then again there really isn't much for it to compete against. As great as Audra was though, she was often hard to understand and really doesn't have great material, Christine shouldn't even raise an eyebrow. Audra's performance won't be getting in her way.

What about the Men?

I only saw a reading last year and the original and I have to disagree that about the score.

It is and always has been one of my favorites.
I am anxious to see it at 54.

Maybe if they had put everything to a rock beat, you might have enjoyed it more.

It's a gorgeous score, and whatever languors the book might possess, it's a romantic story in the classic musical comedy mode. This show is decidedly worth reviving, if anything, overdue, with LES MIZ and SWEENEY back, two shows that didn't quite go away. Not a slam to them -- hold your vitriol -- I just want to see some lost treasures, not just rebuffed jewels.

If it gets the reviews, maybe it can transfer to Broadway

Just got back from TKTS with great center orchestra (Row H) seats for today's matinee. I can't wait!

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I was there last night! Audra is simply incredible...although, I am not going to lie, they need to adjust the balance between the orchestra and her...she was drowned out a couple of times. the show itself was AMAZING. the ensemble was solid and the set and costumes were great. Casting wise..the entire family was great (the dad and two brothers) and clearly, so was ms. audra, but, the other men (starbuck and file) I thought were very weak vocally.

I would definitely recommend seeing it..if you can...we had a really hard time getting tickets!

Desiree, I saw the show today at the matinee and the sound mixing was perfect. They must have fixed any problems they had last night. Literally the only problem today was with one of the spotlights not working correctly. Otherwise the show went off without a hitch.
