I couldn't seem to find one of those riveting "WHAT WILL _____ PERFORM AT THE TONYZ" threads, so I thought I'd start one. Has anyone announced yet/what do you think they'll all perform?
And what will happen with those closed revivals? They all don't have an "I Will Never Leave You", that's for sure!
Guilty Pleasure
Ragtime could easily do a snippet of "Back to Before" and Finian's could do "Glocca Morra," "Old Devil Moon," or "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love." If the opening this year is anything like last year, they could certainly be featured, Stockard Channing style. With or without Aaron Tveit creepily seducing them.

Ragtime should do an abridged version of "New Music", I'm obsessssed. Or "Henry Ford"!
Well, I think it's safe to say neither show would do fully staged production numbers. Either way, "Henry Ford" would never be performed at the Tony Awards. It's just not that kind of number.
~Steven
If RAGTIME performs, and they perform a full number, it *has* to be either "Back to Before," "Your Daddy's Son," or if they really want to go all out: "'Til We Reach That Day" (which is very unlikely).
Lol, "Henry Ford" was complete sarcasm, Steven.
So, are you saying this will be their Tony Performance?
Lovin' Those Background Gurlz...
Some people mentioned Montego Glover will sing "Coloured Woman", I think a medley with "Stand Up" and "Underground" would be a good idea.
Finian's should do the "Come and Get it Day"
Those girls were my fave as well.
I'm interested to see what Fela! does.
~Steven
Fela! didn't have any memorable number IMO. But the 1st song was ok, then I realized the whole 2.5 hours were basically the same thing.
Fela!'s situation seems similar to the situation with Passing Strange, where it would be hard to take any one number out of context. I think they could find a way, maybe do a mix of "Everything Scatter" and "Kere Kay" with some audience participation thrown in.
I think I enjoyed the show more than you did, muscle. Then again, so did most critics and the Tony nominators.
~Steven
I think Fela! will have a good performance at the Tonys though.
What other shows are you looking forward to seeing perform at the Tonys?
Frankly, I'd be more excited to see performances from the closed shows or those not nominated for the top prizes. Those are the shows that really stood out to me this year: Finian's Rainbow, Ragtime, Everyday Rapture, and Sondheim on Sondheim. I wonder if any of them will get to perform.
~Steven
We shall wait and see. Finian's should do that song I mentioned. I loved it.
It's not unheard of fo closed shows with nominations to so a song - not usually a full production number. Dorothy London sang "50 percent" from the long closed BALLROOM, Judy Kuhn recreated the title song from RAGS and last year Stockard Channing got to do a little of "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered" from PAL JOEY.
It would be fun to have nominee Christopher Fitzgerald do "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love" from FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and a neat Tony tie-in since David Wayne (the original OG) was one of the very first Tony winners in 1947.
an as several people have suggested "Back to Before" as a solo would work from RAGTIME. Both these shows received multiple niminations.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
And of course, Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner did "I Will Never Leave You" when Side Show had already closed. I thought it was a thrilling performance too.
~Steven
SIDE SHOW was a great Tony moment - made me regret even more having missed the show (It closed before I got to New York that spring.)
There have been a few cases when shows NOT nominated got to do a short bit: BIG and STATE FAIR in 1996 and I REMEMBER MAMA, Richard Rodgers' last musical, as part of a tribute to him in 1979 just a few months before he passed away.

It might be hard for them to do "Come and Get It Day" from Finian's, since it included most of the cast, and wouldn't it be difficult to round them all up again now that the show has closed? I'm not sure how that works but I would think that would be the case. My guess would be that if they have any performances from Finian's at all, it would be something which only required 2-3 of the leads.
Remember kids that the Broadway producers of each musical have to pay for the number to be included on the telecast. The network isn't covering union/performance costs. Its almost unthinkable that the producers of RAGTIME and or FINIAN'S RAINBOW would pay the money to have a number included on the telecast.
As I remember it, one of the only reasons SIDE SHOW performed was that at the time the producers were in discussions for a West End production featuring Skinner and Ripley and it was considered a good PR move.

There was also 2008, where THE LITTLE MERMAID, A CATERED AFFAIR and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN got to perform. As well as 9 TO 5 in last year's opening number.
