I couldn’t watch tonight, but I read the list. I’ve said before that I’m not a big fan or Strange Loop, so obviously that wasn’t my pick, but it’s no surprise. I’m particularly frustrated that they won director, because I think Stephen Brackett is one of the most tasteless hacks in the industry. I also think Josh Henry’s performance in Wrong Man was worlds better than Larry Owens’ performance.
Inheritance didn’t pick up steam this awards season, at least not as much as the probably expected. But ultimately, with it being an early favorite, it’s still not a surprise. Lois Smith looked a bit lost onstage when I saw her. I would’ve rather seen Elizabeth Rodriguez win. I also have major issues with the play’s direction, so I wasn’t thrilled about Daldry winning. Happy for Paul Hilton though - he was excellent.
Happy to see Dave Malloy win for music, and I’m thrilled that Is This a Room won for Theatrical Experience.
The play revival category is a bit underwhelming, but I did really like Soldier’s Play. My pick probably would’ve been Mac Beth though.
Happy for Edmund Donovan and Liza Colon-Zayas. Both excellent perifrmances.
I would have picked Saycon Sengbloh over Adrienne Warren. Warren was great, but it just felt like an impersonation. Sengbloh gave a much more interesting performance IMO.
Jack Thorne’s script for Christmas Carol was fine. But I thought it was the least impressive of all the nominees, except maybe Judgement Day.
I agree with most of the design award choices, except sound design of a play. Is This a Room and Dana H both had masterful sound design that was pivotal for each show.
This was already discussed in the nominations thread, but I think it’s worth mentioning again that A Strange Loop is only the 3rd Off-Broadway production in the history of the Drama Desks to win Best Musical (the first 2 were Little Shop and Hamilton). We already knew this would happen this year, since all of the nominees in that category were Off-Broadway.

I know I’m in the minority here, but I had an issue with Warren’s performance - though not through any fault of her own. There was a specific choice related to the structure and direction of the show that, IMO, made Warren’s performance feel very 2-dimensional, despite her undeniable talent and charisma. I could go into more detail if you want, but it might be boring. Suffice it to say, I acknowledge that she’s a total powerhouse, but the show got in her way, IMO.
Given that the Broadway season is always backloaded -- which, this year, meant that many heavily touted shows never opened or even began previews, it's perhaps not surprising to see such a strong Off-Broadway showing. I definitely cannot think of a Broadway performance I saw this season that equals Larry Owens in A STRANGE LOOP or Edmund Donovan in GREATER CLEMENTS in their respective categories. I would have personally chosen GREATER CLEMENTS for best play.
I'm a little surprised that HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING walked away empty-handed given how acclaimed it was. Personally, the play did nothing for me, but I thought it would probably win Best Play over the rather tepidly received INHERITANCE.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
This felt very spot on. I was very happy to see Liza Colon-Zayas take that award; I consider it a testament to her career interpreting Adley-Gurgis' work with honesty and dedication.

YES! This is exactly how I felt. The show kept stifling her performance. She wasn't able to really let loose until the final number. It was clear she had all of that bottled up the whole show but never got to pay it off with any of the songs until then.
