I think Oh Mary is still going to undoubtedly win for Cole, Conrad, Direction, and Costumes. Play, however, this Pulitzer win just took Oh Mary's runaway win and made a split 50/50 between them and Purpose.

GoldDerby.com's David Buchanan has posted a mini-analysis of how recent Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists have fared at the Tonys. He also lists the 17 works that won the Tony for Best Play AND the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

I just feel like "Oh, Mary" is the event play of the season.

You’re underselling it. I think it’s one of the great Broadway achievements of the past decade.

In 3 weeks it will surpass the broadway run of THE HUMANS (which I believe is the only non-spectacle/IP play to run that long in recent memory?)

It has turned Cole Escola into something of a star.

It has proven to work with two other very different types of actors in it.

It will do gangbusters in regional/community licensing.

It’s a singular artistic achievement that wasn’t noted to death and sanded down by producers and an endless development cycle.

And it is unabashedly a very stupid comedy in a time in which there aren’t a lot of new American comedies on Broadway.

While I realize that it was not eligible for this year's Pulitzer, John Proctor Is The Villain is a better play than both Purpose and Oh Mary, and should win Best Play. "Should win" and "going to win" are two different things, but JPITV deserves it.

That being said, I felt largely indifferent towards Purpose. I didn't dislike it, but it didn't strike me the way that Appropriate did, and it certainly didn't strike me as a Pulitzer-worthy work. BJJ is still one of our best currently working playwrights, but Purpose is not his best and I wish that his Pulitzer had been for one of his better pieces.

I agree, Kad. That really is a behemoth of a play and I think out of all of his work, would've been the most deserving. Although if he had won for Appropriate I would not have scoffed at that either.
