#125 MGM Films in the works for the stage?!
Posted: 7/2/07 at 4:53pmI went to Legally Blonde this past weekend, and looking through the Playbill under Who's Who, MGM on Stage, whom have produced Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, say they currently have 25 projects in the works.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:02pmWow...Broadway seems to REALLY be getting desperate. I don't know about some of MGM's choices...it makes me nervous for the future of Broadway.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:05pmWow. I was about to say, "I hope they're better than waht they've produced so far"...but after looking at that list, I guess not.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:09pmIt just seems both Hollywood and (hate say) Broadway are running out of original ideas. Hollywood is making musicals into movies, Broadway is making movies into musicals, then hollywood remakes them into musical movies.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:23pmHmmmm- Midnight Cowboy is pretty much my all-time favorite movie. I honestly can't see it as a musical. At. All. I also don't believe that any presently living actor could possibly equal Dustin Hoffman's performance as Rizzo- especially while breaking out into song.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:32pmTo be fair, MARTY, MOONSTRUCK and ...MINSKY'S all have been in some stage of development for years. MARTY actually had a production in Boston, with John C. Reilly as MARTY.

So I'm presuming that there Desperatley Seeking Susan is the same one soon opening in London? If so, i know who's playing Susan (but I'm not aloud to tell!)

Posted: 7/2/07 at 5:50pmI think Mermaids & Moonstruck have potential.... But I don't care for the other ideas.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 6:42pmIn Plabill, did it actualy say '25 theatrical projects' or just '25 projects'. Im just guessing they were proberbly talking about the future movie schedule they have. To have 25 theatre shows line up is a little adventourous would you agree. Where would they all go?

I actually could see A Shot in the Dark or Pink Panther working if they got the right actor to play Clousseau. But it all depends on him so if it's the wrong choice it'll die a quick death.
The Thomas Crown Affair? That wasn't even a good/popular movie.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 6:52pmThe Man In The Iron Mask was done in London last year with disastrous results. It recieved some of the worst reviews in London theatre history, lasted 2 weeks and that was by the producer keeping it going. Its only the second show ive seen when the audience were unable to stop laughing at the total trash that was on stage. I couldnt bare to stay beyond the intermission. It was called Behind The Iron Mask and starred Sheila Ferguson who totaly disowned the show after her reviews but had to slug it out the last 10 or more shows. A cd was made and is available but with a different actress taking over from Ms ferguson. A truly rare bad nights theatre.

I saw the stage version of Easter Parade, an MGM film which is now handled by Warner Bros. theatrical, at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre and hated it. There are stage versions of The Night They Raided Minsky's and I've heard that Moonstruck was being planned for the stage. I considered going to see a stage version of Man in the Iron Mask in London, but it got terrible reviews, and I opted for Mary Poppins instead. Frankly, Midnight Cowboy, The Thomas Crown Affair and Rainman don't really sing, do they? Lucky Stiff has the same plot as Weekend at Bernie's, and it's a better show than they could possibly make of that movie. Without Peter Sellars, what would The Pink Panther and A Shot in the Dark be like onstage? Awful.
Marty would make a good opera, but not a musical. The rest? Would an audience want to see these things? It's a frightening though, isn't it?
