We saw it yesterday and had a blast.

Mrs R had misgivings when I got the tickets . She was pleasantly surprised. The cast , doing multiple roles, has more energy than the energizer bunny. Nancy Opel is a rip and in one number brings back memories of Cuccioli doing "Confrontation" in J/H.

The music rocks and look forward to getting the CD. The seats were phenominal.I wound up getting squirted during one number"

All in all a fun show

It's funny how recently you tried to make fun of me by saying I must think Toxic Avenger is a classic movie!

Another one where the 4th wall comes down? Thanks for the heads up about getting squirted. Put this on my "AVOID" list.

Is there something about a show where the fourth wall comes down that makes it something to avoid? While I think not every show that does it needs to but, when done right, it can be a very enjoyable experience.

I don't like having to deal with the possibility of being squirted, touched, or anything else. So yes, for me it is something to avoid.

Some people avoid shows with gunshots. I avoid shows with audience interaction like that. What's the difference?

Thanks for answering. I was just curious because I know there are some who believe that breaking the fourth wall is a huge no-no - whether you're touched or just spoken to.

I spoke to someone who hated Drowsy Chaperone because there was no fourth wall. But I found it to be a very enjoyable experience.

I don't like shows that want me to BE the entertainment. (ie. 80's prom, etc) But immersing myself (Hair) or being spoken directly to doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this silly show.

I don't mind the breaking that happened like in Drowsy, but I don't like to be touched or squirted, etc. (confetti that comes over the whole audience is ok...that's not directed at one person). OR have people get in my face. I think for me it comes from the time I saw Tarzan and one of the ensemble members who was a gorilla felt the need to slide across the stage and get about an inch from my face, scaring me half to death. (I know that wasn't normal because the girls next to me had seen it a lot and said they had NEVER seen that happen before.) So anytime there is prowling in the audience (yes, I HATED Hair but for more than just that ~ and no, I did not choose to go...someone misunderstood that the list was "things I do NOT want to see" and bought tickets for it), or things being thrown or squirted at audience members, I just try to avoid.

That's fair enough. I think I'd be scared if a gorilla got in my face too re: 3 Cheers For Toxie (Avenger)

After a week of New york Theatre which included Billy Elliot, 9 to 5, Ruined, 39 Steps,
my absolute favorite evening in the theatre that week was Toxic
Avenger. I was blown away but the set, the cast, the production.

(Yes I liked Billy Elliot but I expected too!-- I didn't think I'd like9 to 5 but it was loads of fun as usual, the critcs got it wrong.

If you don't want to be squirted, just sit 5 rows back and you will be safe.

Do not miss one of the best musicals with the best cast in years!
Nancy Opel Rock.

Do you think it will have a respectable run and go on to have a major life as a "midnight" production in colleges (like EVIL DEAD, BAT BOY, and REEFER MADNESS seem destined for, replacing the rapidly tiring ROCKY HORROR SHOW?)

*GASP* Rocky Horror is NOT rapidly tiring
trust me, I've performed/watched the film for well over 4 years

You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl

"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor

"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl

"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

Jordangirl, you didn't like HAIR? You just lost cool points!

But this show is easy to avoid the little "interaction" there is. Just don't sit in the front row and you'll be fine. That's about all there is. It's a great show.

Anyone know how it's selling? New World Stages shows tend to close quickly, for some reason, so I hope this one lasts a good while. It deserves it. The music is great and they really rock out!

I really want to see Nicholas R. go on as the Toxic Avenger. So if anyone knows of any dates, give me a heads up!

At this point in its run, it appears to be less rapidly tiring than Evil Dead was. I don't know about its grosses, but I surmise it's at least breaking even. (Disclaimer: I found the show about as entertaining as a real abortion happening onstage, even with as talented a cast as the production has.)

It's been running since early/mid March (I think)...it took over the ROA theater. But other than that I have no idea how it's been selling.

I found it funny when talking to the SM of Altar Boyz about a week or two after it opened. He had just seen it and highly reccommended it...thought it was gads better than ROA, which apparently, he thought was constantly full of drunks.

THe movie on which it is based is gawd awful bad. It was on the other night and I attempted to watch it...but really could not. As the song implies: I wasnt' stoned at the time.

I mean, I'm sure the show isn't for everyone. It's def. hit or miss, but I think Desmond Green (I think that's how you spell his name?) is just oozing with talent. He has a killer voice, and his comedic timing is awesome.

It sounds like this is turning into a word of mouth hit. It deserves to. It's one of those "no gag too cheap" shows, but it totally works. And yes, the cast is superb.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. im another one to champion toxic avenger. what a fun night at the theatre. it might not have the sophistication of batboy or urinetown, but it's certainly a good time, and there's a whole lot of talent running around on that stage. worth the price of admission.
