Just returned from seeing the matinee today. Yesterday was Mrs R's birthday so we celebrated today. We saw the show & had dinner at Maison afterwards.
The show was great. I came in expecting to be bored out of my mind and was really surprised. The play itself was very well written and staged. Jane Fonda was extremely good as was the entire cast.
Impressionism was OK but nothing great shakes. 33 was absorbing from start to finish.Besides Fonda, Zach Grenier as Beethoven was awesome.Susan Kellerman was an unexpected surprise as Dr Ladenburger who befriends Fonda in her research in the museum in Bonn. Samantha Mathais as Fondas daughter was good as was Colin Hanks as her love interest.
See it if you can. We had great TDF seats in the orchestra
I, too, liked Susan Kellerman a great deal. She really fleshed out a role that all too easily could've been a one-note "robust German woman" stereotype.

It's one of the best new plays I've seen in a long time.

I was at today's matinee, and I was so moved by this play. The performances were all excellent with Jane Fonda and Zach Grenier being especially remarkable. Everyone seemed to be very genuine and in the moment so I felt involved the whole time. The set is fluid and evocative, and the scene changes are fast and unobtrusive. But special bravas to Diane Walsh, the pianist. How wonderful to have her bringing the subject matter so beautifully to life. I highly recommend this.
I deeply hope that Kellerman gets a Tony nod. I found her a warm, authentic prescence in a play that explores austere relationships.
I enjoyed about every moment of 33 Variations. I was moved and intrigued throughout.
While not suprised by the lukewarm reviews, I was hoping for a better outlook.
