It seems to be a lot of 'meh' reviews.
That seems to be the general feeling we've heard of the opinions here, too.
NYT - pretty positive
That Isherwood piece sounds very polite/euphemistic, almost as if he owed someone a favor.

He gave a very similar, positive review when it premiered at Paper Mill.

Between Ride the Cyclone and this, Isherwood's making it clearer than ever that he has no idea what he's talking about. Get him out of there, NYT, and poach Jesse Green.
The fact that the only thing he said about the main actor is "he has a rich tone" is just embarrassing.

Terrible idea. The Times is too important to be given to Jesse Green, who is a brilliant writer but overly dismissive of everything but the highbrow. The Times needs to reflect the wider theater-going audience, not just the top right corner of New York Magazine's Approval Matrix.

Needs? That's your opinion. Since when is The New York Times made for the middle brow general audience?
I don't hate his reviews, he's certainly less bitchy than Brantley which is good. People might not ageee with all of his reviews but it's still just a singular persons opinion. Honestly it's Brantley I can't stand, he reminds me of Green, great writing but very dismissive of so much.

Is it safe to assume Chris Jones is happy in Chicago?
I saw this horrendous piece of garbage tonight. Easily in my top 5 most hated shows I've ever seen and I wish I walked out during intermission. Between the horrendous stereotypes and awful lyrics and songs I can't say I enjoyed one thing about this show. I went in not reading anything about it but once that second song with the Dad and C playing catch hit I knew it was gonna be a long night.
Thankfully I grabbed a ticket from TDF for this and even then I still feel I like wasted too much money on this.
