Wow, so curious to listen to this, I've yet to watch the film.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC Soundtrack

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Wow, pretty fascinating. I love the extended version of DEATH. It's not a great movie, but this will be nice to have.

The two disc recording of the last Broadway revival is excellent, as it incorporates a lot of the show's dialogue. By the way, CZJ's version of Send in the Clowns is infinitely better on the recording than it was on the Tonys broadcast, where she really strugged with the Music Hall venue.

Best parts:

The orchestrations are wonderful (and Oscar-winning for Tunick).

And Elaine Tompkinson (dubber) does a great job with the new version of "The Glamorous Life."

She dubs both Fredrika and Anne (plus a bit of Taylor in the opening).

Unfortunately, most of the singing is pretty lifeless, even from the pros and OBC members. It' pretty telling when non-singer Diana Rigg does some of the better song interpretations on the soundtrack.

I listened to the revival recording all the way through once. I'll take the gorgeous orchestrations and nuanced performances of the OBC over that more complete recording any day. I was a fan of the revival, but I cannot stand the recording.

Although the revival holds a special place in my heart, I don't listen to the recording often. I do think they did a FANTASTIC job at expanding the orchestrations for the recording. They sound much better on the recording than in the theater. Those expanded orchestrations should have been used in the theater.

The film is ghastly and so is the soundtrack.

I must have it.

Neither the film nor soundtrack album could be called "ghastly". Paul Ryan is ghastly. The album has been available on CD for many years under the counter by private vendors- ioffer, ebay and the like. They've generally been from good sources, most likely reel-to-reel or cassette tape copies. But I'm very excited about a legit release, especially with Sondheim's involvement. I only hope they don't exclude the intro of "Love Takes Time", the way they did on the track in the "Story So Far" compilation.

Although the new version of "Glamorous Life" has been issued on CD twice before (in RCA's "Collector's Sondheim" set and as a bonus track on Sony remaster of the OBCR), this Cd reissue of the movie soundtrack album is welcome because it allows us to hear the lyric version of "Night Waltz" ("Love Takes Time") that both opens and closes the album. Also the original LP release opened the second side with a gorgeous instrumental version of the the "Night Waltz." That's at least 3 tracks that will make this new edition worth picking up.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

It was kind of them to wait until Elizabeth Taylor was dead before they released this.

No one has ever sung the line "Losing my timing this late, in my...KUH-REEEAHHHhhhh..." exactly the same way that she did.

And, if we're lucky, no one ever will.

I've always wanted to see this film, in the same way I wanted to see the Chorus Line film. To answer the question: "how bad is it, really?"

"It was kind of them to wait until Elizabeth Taylor was dead before they released this."

It almost makes you wonder if she had the power and the desire to ensure that they did wait until she died.

I always seem to forget how horrible this film actually is. It seems a few years go by and I convince myself that it couldn't possible be as bad as I remember so I watch it again. And it's not as bad as I remember, it's worse. Yet, I still watch it. Like a roadside accident, I can't look away.

The film committed the worse sin in being boring. It took one of my favorite shows and turned it into a movie that I've never even been able to make it all the way through. I end up either falling asleep or getting distracted by something else and giving up before I ever make it all the way through. I almost wish it was so bad that it rounded the corner and became a campy masterpiece. At least then it might be watchable.

Esteemed film critic Pauline Kael's infamously said of Hal Prince's direction of the film: "This picture has been made as if the director had never seen a movie."
