I recently had some brilliant (in my opinion) casting ideas for either another A Little Night Music revival or movie remake. I was curious if anyone else had ideas.
Desiree- Meryl Streep
Fredrik- ???
Madame Armfeldt-Maggie Smith (I know she's retired from the stage)
Henrik- Hugh Skinner (he was Joly in Les Mis)
Anne- Katie Hall
Carl-Magnus- Hadley Fraser (I know he's playing it in a concert soon)
Charlotte- Michelle Dockery
Petra- Lauren Molina
Fredrika- Chloe Moritz

Fredrik - Victor Garber. I saw him in A Little Night Music at the LA Opera several years ago and he was phenomenal.
Zoe Caldwell played Madame Armfeldt in that production and was fabulous. Judi Dench would be great as well, though she is still, imo, the consummate Desiree.

I hate to be the person that calls Meryl Streep's age into question, but I really think she's too old for Desiree. But fifteen years ago she would have been a revelation to say the least.
Let's call it a movie and PLEASE inspire a new one to happen:
Desiree: Michelle Pfeiffer or Annette Benning
Frederick: Clive Owen
Charlotte: Emily Blunt
Carl Magnus: Cheyenne Jackson
Mme Armfeldt: Judy Dench
The young folk are pointless to cast since they'll have grown far too old by the time this sees the light of day.
movie:
Desiree - Michelle Pfeiffer
Fredrik - Peter Gallagher
Anne - Evan Rachel Wood
Henrik - Eddie Redmayne
Charlotte - Nina Arianda
Carl Magnus - Cheyenne Jackson
Madame Armfeldt - Diana Rigg
Petra - Samantha Barks
I still like my Michelle Pfeiffer as Desiree and Julie Christie as Madame Armfeldt idea
As much as I adore Nina Arianda, I feel like she looks a little too young for Charlotte. However, the Michelle Pfeiffer suggestion is terrific.
Annette Benning, ugh, yes please!! That just sounds like heaven. How about Megan Hilty as Petra?
Cheers,
C.
Mery Streep, seriously? Does she have to be in everything? It gets boring after awhile.
I like the Michelle Pfieffer idea. Or maybe Jessica Lange.
Faye Dunaway as Armfeldt would be heaven.

I'd love to see Megan Hilty, Nina Arianda, Betsy Wolfe or Laura Benanti as Charlotte. Audra Mcdonald or Donna Murphy as Desiree. Anna Kendrick or Lindsey Mendez as Petra. Andrew Keenan Bolger as Henrik. Laura Osnes or Sierra Boggess as Anne.
I saw Jean Simmons and Margaret Hamilton do the show in the late 70's. Wonderful!
It pains me to see that no one so far has suggested Angela Lansbury for the role of Mme. Armfeldt. She was fantastic in the 2010 revival and could have won her a long overdue Oscar. Not to mention she hasn’t played a decent film role in 30 years. I love Dame Judi, but enough with her already, she’s basically the British equivalent of Meryl Streep in terms of grabbing every juicy part for an actress over 60.
As for Desiree, I love the idea of Annette Bening and Michelle Pfeiffer. Never even thought about them before they’ll be perfect.
Here's my dream cast:
Desiree Armfeldt…….Catherine Zeta-Jones/Kristin Scott Thomas
Frederick Egerman…….Colin Firth/Hugh Jackman
Mme. Armfeldt…….Angela Lansbury
Carl-Magnus Mittelheim…….Benedict Cumberbatch
Charlotte Mittelheim…….Emily Blunt
Anne Egerman…….Emmy Rossum
Henrik Egerman …. Eddie Redmayne

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bernadette Peters and Angela Lansbury were all dream casting to me in the recent revival. I know it has its detractors but I enjoyed every minute of it. I don't really feel compelled to see any other version of it.
Movie cast:
Fredrik - Robert Downey, Jr.
Desiree - Cate Blanchett
Charlotte - Scarlett Johansson
Madame Armfeldt - Judi Dench
Carl Magnus - Chris Pine
Anne - Chloe Moretz
Henrik - Skandar Keynes
Petra - Megan Hilty

Odd thing here is that I think Catherine Zeta-Jones would be a great Charlotte and Hugh Jackman would be a fine Carl Magnus, but I don't think either of them would accept a supporting role. And I think they are both hugely overrated in most lead roles.
Pfeiffer is truly inspired casting for Desiree. Redmayne would be a fine Henrik and and Hilty a wonderful Petra. Some clever ideas here, folks!
I would love to see Penny Fuller or Holland Taylor as Madame Armfeldt.
Frederik? No argument with Garber, although, long in the tooth though he may be, Keith Carradine comes to mind as well.
It will never be filmed again, though.
Desiree really shouldn't be older than 45-ish. Michelle Pfeiffer is over 50. (Bernadette was on Broadway-in film, casting younger is typically how it's done.)
That said, if they ever did a film, I think Catherine Zeta-Jones should reprise her role. (I don't think this will get made in time for her to play the role, because, frankly, it's not Sondheim's most accessible piece. Into the Woods probably is, and being done.)
Cast:
Desiree: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Frederik: Victor Garber, Colin Firth or Hugh Jackman
Charlotte: Emily Blunt
Anne: An Opera Singer-the role requires a legitimate soprano
Henrik: Male Opera Singer
Petra: Megan Hilty
Mme. Armfeldt: Helen Mirren
Desiree: Catherine Zeta-Jones
'Desiree really shouldn't be older than 45-ish. Michelle Pfeiffer is over 50.'
Good thing Pfeiffer doesn't look a day over 40.
So we're all just gonna cast Fredrika to the wind, huh? Come on. Let's see some guesses for that one. I'm seeing a lot of casts that could work, but no suggestions for the kid.
There's always Lila Crawford for Fredericka. Wait a few years and you'll have 4 Matildas to audition.
