For anyone interested in the Janis show, there's a similar one playing Off-Broadway at 54th and 8th for two more nights. It's a one-woman show of a performer and pioneering theatre coach that was inspired by Janis Joplin and lives/teaches rock music. I'm working on it and I watch her every night, and she's got that same limitless raw energy that Janis has. It's only $18, next two nights at 7:30, so if you're waiting for affordable tix to Janis, this is a great night. Similar structure of using a concert to span a personal story and the influences of rock music, and if you're a performer, she shares great info on how she understands/teaches rock music to theater peeps (and coaches people live at one point). She's pretty amazing and it's a unique show- check her out.
See her sing (I love this clip): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T0QEToYkG0

It's def. considered a play. Everyone else it has played it's been called a play. It's because the music doesn't progress the plot at all. They aren't integral to the story. They're just songs. So therefore it's a play. I'm not sure how Motown does it, but do the songs help the story?
^ Define "story;" haha. MOTOWN has a plot, albeit a horribly-constructed and poorly-developed one, but it is there. This one isn't so clearly delineated. I'm not sure if the songs in the show progress the plot (again, define "plot," because there really isn't one) but they are certainly strategically placed throughout the piece. There are moments, for example, where Joplin talks about her influences, such as Nina Simone, who will then sing. And we get a whole introduction to her duet with Aretha Franklin, which is then performed.
If the "special event" category were still around, I guess this show would fit the bill, but with around 25 songs, many of which are performed without spoken words in between, I'm not sure how this could be considered a new "play."

Well, I saw this yesterday, at the matinee with Alison Cusano as Janis, and hot damn she was astonishing. I actually really want to go back to see Mary Bridget Davies because I can't imagine someone being a better Janis. The audience was eating this **** up (and the book, if you can call it that, is quite ****ty.) I have to say when the music was blaring and Janis and her incredible Joplinaires (all four of them, top notch - and great to have in the show to let Janis have room to breathe; very smart) were singing at full throated volume, it was unlike anything I've seen.
It's not a great show, but it's amazing.

Alison Cusano was amazing yesterday, when I entered the theater and saw she was playing Janis I was disappointed. I left the play entertained and in awe of her singing. Sure weak story, but tremendous effort

I can't say enough good things about this show, its PHENOMENAL, beautiful, mesmerizing and even a little haunting, the stage is filled with stunning voices and don't get me started about how amazing Mary Bridget Davies is as Janis, she is absolutely THE REAL DEAL, give her the tony now, this show is one of the best musicals of the season far and above and deserves to be remembered and rewarded come award season, seriously any show that gets 10+ standing ovations (as it did tonight) deserves some TONY love!
Sidenote, there is no way the TONY committee considers this a PLAY, its a revue like After Midnight

I saw this last night as the penultimate show in a 3 day, 8 show string (including 54 Below/Joe's Pub shows). I left at intermission (first time I have ever done that in over 100 Broadway/Off-Broadway shows). To me, it was a concert. Complete with two middle aged women in the 4th row (directly in front of me) regularly interacting with the lead, and thinking that was perfectly normal and ok. Davies was good performing Joplin songs, but I foolishly thought this would be more like Love, Janis, which actually has a compelling plot (my bad for not researching). Not my cup of tea when I go to the theatre, but most seemed to be enjoying themselves. As a sidenote, I saw Clanton do Love, Janis at the San Diego Rep and she was amazing in that role.
