When the glorious Carol Channing revived HELLO, DOLLY! the last time 'round, there were FIVE standing ovations:
1) When this magnificent Star of Stars stepped off the trolley in "Call On Dolly"
2) When this sensational musical comedy legend led the parade at the end of Act I
3) When this Goddess of Musical Comedy appeared at the top of the stairs at the Harmonia Gardens
4) When this Tony Award winning paragon finished the "Hello, Dolly!" number
5) When my favorite person in the whole world (with Patti LuPone as a very close second) took her curtain call
(The fact that her then-husband and I were working as a team to initiate these standing ovations should not be considered in this matter!)
You won't have to be the one to start it.
The Spring kids are quite emotional...were you at Gallagher's last? This will be like that, but times about 10.
A few weeks ago, Patti got a standing ovation upon her entrance. It was really weird because....that never, ever happens. Not even on opening night. She normally just gets an extensive, loud applause.
And re: Sunday at Spring Awakening - I think it's gonna be absolute madness. Gallagher's last was relatively well-behaved. Groff and Lea's last? Yeah, not so much, I don't think. It'll be interesting.
There was one after 'One Song Glory' when I saw it- when Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp were doing their run in RENT last summer.

When i went there was a huge applause and once she got on the stage it went on and on. Everything she did she got a huge applause.

I've seen them during two shows- Bernadette in the Gypsy revival, and also about every few songs during Kristin's last performance in Wicked. Seriously, that show must have been at least 30 minutes longer than usual because of the constant applause. It was like that for the Saturday evening performance, too.

The only one I've ever witnessed (which seems to be the most experienced in this thread) is after Patti LuPone's "Roses Turn" at City Center this summer. It was literally a defining moment in my life. Absolutely unbelieveable. The applause went on for at least 3 minutes
"The only other one I've ever seen was for Hugh Jackman after "Once Before I Go" in THE BOY FROM OZ - and the whole audience rose as one for him on that one."
That's the only one I've ever seen happen. I saw BFO three times, and each time he got a standing ovation after that song.

ONCE BEFORE I GO, the eleven o'clock number in THE BOY FROM OZ for Hugh Jackman drew a standing ovation at each of the different times I saw the show on Broadway. In addition to the response to the song delivery, I think it was also an appreciation for the exceptional work he has put onstage ( he was onstage for all the scenes except for one) - singing, dancing and acting. It was then followed by the RIO finale which elicited a curtain call standing ovation.
In Australia, for the arena show, ONCE BEFORE I GO was sung more like an epilogue song, after the frenzy of I GO TO RIO. It was more beautifully done, as after he sang it even more poignantly, he smiled and turned back to walk away towards the back and the name of PETER ALLEN flashed on the big screen.
But was even more amazing was that during the closing show of TBFO on Broadway, there were a few mid-show standing ovations, including one when Hugh first appeared onstage, in the dark -LOL!
When Patti did Gypsy for the first time at Ravina, following her Rose's Turn there was dead silence. Then the entire audience erupted into applause and gave her a standing ovation. She looked absolutely stunned.
When I saw Caroline or Change in London Tonya received a standing ovation following Lot's Wife, definitely something out of the ordinary for a London audience.
Did Ebersole usually get a standing ovation when she made her first entrance through the doors in Act 2?

I can't remember the song, but midway through No, No Nanntte a couple of people were standing in the mezz
Closing night of the Les Miz tour in St. Louis, Randal Keith got a partial standing ovation for Bring Him Home.
I also may have been one of the instigators in a few partial standing O's at Jersey Boys in SF...like some other people on this board...

The amazingly talented Darlene Love got one after "I Know Where I've Been" in her final performance of HAIRSPRAY. It was truly a chilling and emotional performance that I will never forget. That (67 year old) girl can SING!
OMG the LONDON with Julia...I saw that and I think the audience gave them 5 Standing O's after YSDYRTB. They did like 5 encores...I remembered that very, very well!!
"Beth got one at the last show, I was there and it was amazing, she held her note for like 5 hours. It was really incredible."
I was there that night too. She totally ate it up.
I've always wanted to be there for one, but I never have.
I was REALLY close to standing for Jeanette Bayardelle after "I'm Here" when I saw her in LA, but the vibe in the theatre wasn't right, no one else would have joined and I would have looked like a douche.
Never in the middle of a show. We're quite conservative with our standing-up here in the UK (also I en't never seen a jukebox musical in the West End, and I suspect those are where the standers like to go). But I have seen John Barrowman in concert twice, and both times he got a standing O after singing 'I Am What I Am'. Just when you thought he couldn't get any gayer...

I saw The Boy from Oz also. Jackman got his standing O after "Once Before I Go," and I always feel that rush after I listen to it on the OBCR.

I have seen standing ovations only a few times~
When Mary Poppins sails away at the end everyone stands. It like you know she is going to do it and yet you are till in awe of the whole thing....
And having seen Linda Eder in concert a few times (I know it is not a musical) but right after 9-11 she got a couple standing ovations during the two different concerts I saw of her. When she would do If I Had My Way... people would be hysterical...
Also I remember when Sacrmento Music Circus did CHESS and the two leading ladies, Judy McLane & Marcia Mitzman got a standing ovation afetr I Know Him So Well. It was so well done and so incredibly powerful you could feel the electricity in the room.
OH OH OH and how can i forget....
BJ Crosby singing the sh.t out of Fool Fall in Love.. It was like going to church and being touch by the spirit of the lord. I mean people went nutso!
Cool thread. I haven't spoken in a while, but I'm not anyone too important but I have a story...
Summer 2006, I believe sometime in July, I actually started a standing O the first time that I saw The Color Purple. I had rush tickets, front row center, and Kenita Miller was on for LaChanze. There was just something about the way Kenita connected with Celie and I was sobbing all the way through "I'm Here". When Kenita sang the final "I'm beautiful...and I'm Here" I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't help myself. The way she delivered the "I'm beautiful" was so chilling that I stood and applauded before she could finish the rest of the phrase. Luckily the rest of the audience joined me, I would have been very embarrassed had they not. There were even people in the balcony standing up. That moment is one I hope to remember for a long time.

The night I saw "Gypsy" at City Center, there were THREE mid-show standing O's: the first was at Patti's entrance, the second after the strobe light sequence, and the third after "Rose's Turn."
That was the only time I've seen something like that happen.
