Have you ever seen it? I heard it happens but I have never been to a show where that has happened. Yesterday came the closest for me at Gypsy.

there's usually a standing O after 'can't take my eyes off you' in jersey boys
It happened to me once. At GYPSY. After Patti LuPone's "Rosie's Turn" at the first Broadway preview.
Jennifer Holiday's AND I AM TELLING YOU....
Tituss to a standing O in The Wiz in LaJolla after "Be a Lion" one time when I was at the show.....
Believe it or not, when I saw the Les Mis revival around New Year's day, there was about six people in the mezz who had a standing ovation for Judy Kuhn after I Dreamed a Dream!

Patti has gotten one after "Rose's Turn" everytime I've seen the current production of GYPSY!.
Tonya Pinkins often received one following "Lott's Wife" in CAROLINE, OR CHANGE.
There are very famous stories of Jennifer Holiday's constant ovations following "And I Am Telling You..." in DREAMGIRLS.
"Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" in JERSEY BOYS often garners one.
Maria Friedman received one at a performance of THE WOMAN IN WHITE following "All For Laura".

Not having seen LuPone in Gypsy (but having seen all the others), only Jennifer Holiday deserved a Standing Ovation.
LuPone in GYPSY at City Center was the only one I've witnessed.
Yup. During the middle of Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You..." in DREAMGIRLS, I remember quite an amount of people started standing as the song was going thru its course. I remember my mom saying its the closest thing she'll ever get to being in a Baptist Church.
A few people also stood at the end of Glenn Close's "As If We Never Said Goodbye" in SUNSET BLVD.
Also, during Ben Vereen's first run in FOSSE, he and Ann Reinking both got standing ovations after "Dancin' Dan (Me and My Shadows)" -- they even did a short encore, and as the first chords of The Manson Trio music (from PIPPIN) started and Ben was revealed center/upstage.
After "The Revolutionary Costume for Today" I believe people gave Christine Ebersole a standing ovation... at least right after she won the Tony.
Early in the run of ALTAR BOYZ, some people stood after "Epiphany" sung by Tyler Maynard.
Fantasia got one after "I'm Here" nightly in The Color Purple.

Has LuPone been getting one after "Everything's Comin' Up Roses"?
When I did "Aida", there were regular standing O's after "The Gods Love Nubia" (BEFORE the lights came up, signalling intermission.)
I've seen one. After "Being Alive" at the first performance after last year's Tonys. Absolutely unforgettable.

The curtain comes down literally as she holds the last note, so there's no time for the audience to offer one up.
Only once.
It was after the "I Love a Piano" number in the show "Irving Berlin's White Christmas". Two or three rows in the front Orchestra stood after they finished the number, and the applause stopped the show for 2 or 3 minutes.
Actually, emcee, you've seen two. Mr Esparrrza also got a standing ovation after "Being Alive" at the final performance. You were probably too emotionally stirred to remember
Oh my gosh, you're right! And yeah, that last half hour or so is a total blur.
There was another one about a week before the show closed, but I don't count it because it was like... partial at best. It seemed like people had basically heard about the 6/12 performance and tried to re-create it or something, but it didn't catch on.

Not only was the audience on its feet during Holliday's "And I am Telling You . . .", some of us were actually standing on our seats. Many others had run down the aisles. I don't expect to experience craziness like that ever again.
The only other one I've ever seen was for Hugh Jackman after "Once Before I Go" in THE BOY FROM OZ - and the whole audience rose as one for him on that one.

I've only seen it occur at WICKED after Defying Gravity and sometimes after No Good Deed
Other shows (like Phantom) some people try to start one but never catches on.

There was one for Brian Stokes Mitchell after The Impossible Dream during the Man of La Mancha revival.
Bernadette Peters got one for her ROSE'S TURN both times I saw her in GYPSY.
Stubby Kaye after Sit Down Your Rocking The Boat. Guys and Dolls.
This was the London revival with Julia McKenzie...
In Jersey Boys after "can't take my eyes off of you" all most every night there is one
