clearly, patti has her supporters. it's ridiculous to say she's not talented. i'm not saying she shouldn't have this role, but pete's sake, at some point someone is going to have to convince her to retire. for the good of broadway. clearly she and her fans have used a scorched earth campaign to get her this productions, but at what cost? friends at each others' throats. a general lack of any attempt at civility in discourse about her show. and worst of all, she has probably poisoned the role for any future rose. she's had a good run, but really, it's becoming like a movie that has gone on about a half an hour too long. if she refuses, then discussions will have to be had among theatre owners and producers about how to protect not just this show, but broadway as a whole.

I'm very happy for everyone involved in this production of GYPSY. I only wish good things for them...but it's already known that Miss LuPone isn't my "cup of tea."

I just think it's stupid that people who voice their opinions get bashed when the people who do the bashing have said things equally as annoying or critical.

Yes...I hate Patti LuPone, but I don't wish bad things for her career or for the production of GYPSY. She's just not my favorite performer...by far.

But if you do love her then more power to you!

Dear PalJoey,

I wear that shirt with PRIDE!

Sincerely, Movie.

PS - Jay, I agree! The 3/22 matinee of 'Gypsy' makes me feel like i'm a theatre aficionado! (I was two rows in front of you, btw)

I am the person who posts as A Director and I do not use any other name. Yes, it is nice that Gypsy got good reviews which means the show will run for awhile. On the other hand, I'm turned off by the over hyping of this production. IMO, 'the role she was born to play" is over the top, but then over the top is the guiding light of this production. Yes, belting is all the rage these days, but I prefer more variety. Yes, Ms. LuPone has talent, but I don't see her as the "second coming." IMO, Arthur Laurents is a ****. For years, he has gone on record with his dislike of Ethel Merman as Rose. He needs to be reminded that without her, there wouldn't be a show called Gypsy. I am not a big Merman fan and it was years before I bought the original cast recording of the show. It seems that in recent years, Laurents has started dismissing Jerome Robbins' contributions to West Side Story and Gypsy. It appears that before he dies, Laurents is out to prove that his productions of both shows will be definitive. Laurents wrote a number of plays, but only one, The Time of the Cuckoo, is performed any more. In the end, Laurents will be remembered for his books for West Side Story and Gypsy.

BTW, paljoey and jaystarr, some day, you might mature into interesting people.

Once again, let it be know that I am NOT the person who posts here as A DIRECTOR.

A DIRECTOR just posted his thoughts and I disagree with some of them. I feel that Lupone is a one note performer. She is Evita.
A great Evita. But to me, she's always Evita. Right now, she makes a great Eva Peron playing Mama Rose. I also feel that Mr. Laurents is far to old to be able to direct ANYTHING.

GYPSY is my favorite musical, make no mistake about that.
I just dont feel,IN MY OPINION, that this is as good as other
people say it is. Thats my opinion. MY opinion. I am not A DIRECTOR. His opinion is in HIS posting.

You know.....Reading all these comments, I don't think anyone has had the pleasure of seeing Ethel Merman in Gypsy. I went to go see Gypsy just this weekend and let me tell you something, me and my husband left! When LuPone did "Everything's Coming Up Roses" I almost cried it was so awfull. Let me say that Broadway has changed so much that I don't hardly go anymore. And I am sure that if Ethel Merman was sitting in the audience (by the way I was good friends with her for almost 10 years) she would've called the curtain on LuPone. I would've rather listened to Tallulah Bankhead caughing a song out then Patti screaming her way thru the performance. I am glad the critics like it and I am glad everyone else likes it. It is just not the show I used to know in 1959!

So, wait, let me get this straight:

There's this woman, named Patti LuPone, and some people are convinced she's the Messiah and a bunch of other people want to crucify her?

That sounds really familiar.

Ughhh, I hate poeple like you, think you know it all and as far as me being an ol fart, I don't feel like dealing with 2 year olds today! Hello, PJ? It's me again. Ethel!

patti is going to kill broadway as we know it

You tell that "A No-Talent Director" and his pal Bert "I Was Disowned by the Andrews Sisters on Account of My Tin Ear" Andrews that Ethel thinks this LuPone kid is not half-bad...if you like talent! She's the last of the big belters!

And as for that fat cow who calls herself CallMeMadam, you tell her I say she's DELOOOOOOOOOOSIONAL! Make sure you hold the OOOO for 3 counts--it's funnier that way: DELOOOOOOOOOOSIONAL!

Boy! I thought I brought out the crazy haters in MY day, but this LuPone kid has crazier haters than I ever had.

Tell her I say her Rose is TERRIFIC! Only one thing: tell her to stick to "muh-muh-muh Mama, muh-muh-muh Mama"--it's better in rhythm.

Bye now, PJ! Love ya!

I probably shouldn't say anything, but what bothers me is...people who just continue to go on threads for ANYONE and comment on how much they don't like the person. I love Patti, personally. and I even understand why people don't like her. but I don't understand why people feel the need to comment on every Gypsy or Patti thread and talk about how much they don't like her.

honestly, if you devoted half the energy to someone you DID like that you devote to not liking Patti...someone would have wonderfully devoted fans.

Perhaps A Director is Lonny Price who, to quote from the Chicago Tribune review, "was pushed aside for New York." For a while it seemed Price was the only director working with LuPone. From Pal Joey in 1995, to all those Sondheim productions at Ravinia, to those televised versions of Sweeney, Candide and Passion ,it seemed to be Price or no one. Now in order to play the role she was born to play on Broadway, LuPone made a deal with the devil (aka Arthur Laurents to Pal Joey and others) and Lonny was left to merely read the reviews.

A Director is NOT Lonny Price. Lonny Price has talent. A Director has neither talent nor taste.
