A quick place to eat in or near TS
#1A quick place to eat in or near TS
Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:32pmMY mother and I are going on a bus trip to NYC tommarow to see "Curtains". Time is tight so we have only a few hours before the show to explore. We were thinking of Sardi's but we would like a quick place to eat that is fast and near Times Square. Any suggestions?

The Edison Cafe. It's on 47th between Broadway and 8th Ave. Next to the Edison Hotel. They are cheap, VERY QUICK, offer a great selection with great food, and is a hangout for Broadway actors. After a visit from Neil Simon several years ago, he decided to write a play inspired by the restaurant called 45 SECONDS FROM BROADWAY.
ETA: They only accept cash.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:38pmThere is a relatively new diner that opened on 8th Ave, just around the corner from Curtains (I believe it's between 45th & 46th, on the east side of the street). Of course, it's no Sardi's, but you can get a decent meal rather quickly for a reasonable price.

Curtains is one block from Restaurant Row (46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues). Lots of restaurants of varying ethnicities. If you want something "theatrical", Joe Allen's on Restuarant Row is fun. Joshua Tree, also on Restaurant Row, is good for salads, sandwiches and they advertise a lobster special, but don't know how good that is. Also, in Shubert Alley is Juniors. 44th Street has Angus McIndoe, John's Pizzeria, Carmines and a noodle place whose name escapes me.
If you want to venture to 9th Avenue (Curtains is on 45th bet. 8th and 9th), you will find lots of great restaurants. SW44 (on the southwest corner of 44th street) is wonderful Italian. Marseille is a great French restaurant.
I personally would suggest either checking out 9th Avenue or Restaurant Row ... you're sure to find something to your liking.

Juniors is expensive.
Joshua Tree is OK.
I'd go with either John's Pizza, Edison Cafe, or Joe Allen's. I've heard tons of good things about Joe Allens.

If you don't mind walking a few blocks, try VNYL on 9th Ave. Really good affordable food and a fun atmosphere.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:51pmOn Broadway/7th directly in Times Square, you, of course, also have McDonald's, Bubba Gumps, Olive Garden, TGIF, Planet Hollywood, and Hard Rock Cafe.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:51pmI've always found Edison Cafe to be kind of dumpy and dirty ... not to my liking at all.

^ Love VYNL.
It's the best.
Has a great selection of food at about 10 dollars a head.
Also, the music themed bathrooms are the coolest.

And in every other city in America as well. If you're coming to NY, at least eat in a restaurant that you can't find in your hometown.

Posted: 3/23/07 at 3:57pmYou could try the Playwright Tavern on 48th or 47th between Broadway and 7th Ave. Decent food and fine atmosphere.

That's a given, WestVillage
Playwright Tavern is good, too. I loved a garlic steak sandwich I got there.
I think Ollies is a bit overrated. Can't beat the price, though. (Ollies is chinese, btw)

Posted: 3/23/07 at 6:03pmThe White Way Diner on 9th Avenue is really good and the service is fast. The Carnegie Deli is also good on 57th and 7th Av. The corned beef melts in your mouth.

Piercemn: I think you mean the Westway Diner on 9th Avenue, not the White Way.
Bundy: The Westway is between 43rd and 44th. Eh, it's okay - typical diner, nothing special. VYNL Diner IS special - it's fun, funky, great food and service, and the decor is really "nifty." VYNL is on 9th between 50th and 51st. It does get crowded, though, so if you go there plan accordingly. Enjoy your day in New York!

If I can add to this question: Are there any breakfast places in the area people would suggest? My hotel is quite pricey for breakfast. Thanks!
