I saw the production at NSMT and no lie I haven't been the same since. Anyone see it? Or the Broadway Production?
I saw the broadcast on PBS and the national tour. I loved every moment of it. While it's certainly not a "musical", it was brilliant and stunning. I don't think Stroman ever surpassed her work on Crazy for You and Contact.
I saw it on Broadway - I thought it was pretty entertaining. Perhaps you can tell us what you felt was so affecting.
I saw it on PBS. It's a great PLAY ... with songs. I wish it were staged more often, but I guess it might be difficult for a lot of regional theatres.
I wouldn't even call it a play. It was three short ballets. If anything, it should be staged by more ballet companies.
I saw the Broadway version 3 times and loved it. It remains one of my all time favorites.
The PBS version I have has the language bleeped in the DID YOU MOVE? section. (I had heard that two versions were offered to stations, one censored and one not.)
The tour that came here had the late Daniel McDonald who was terrific.
It still should not have been nominated as a “musical” but honestly there was nothing else that season (1999-2000) worthy of the award.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Language in "did you move?"? NSMT must have changed it because the worst word in that scene was "Fricken."
Personally, I felt deeply for the wife.

"fricken"?
Wow. Sort of cuts the balls right off of it.
" Don't smile at the waiter, don't look at the busboy - don't frickin move"
He loses all his menace with that euphemism.

The reason regional theatre don't do it is that the show doesn't exist without the Stroman choreography. It's not as if some local choreographer can do their own version of CONTACT. It's kind of like saying, "Why don't regional theatres do FOSSE?"
The only way the show can be done is to have someone associated with the original production come in and re-create Stroman's choreography. Of course, the staging had to be adjusted for NSMT, since they are in-the-round, but it was all Stroman's steps.
I thought it was brilliant. The Girl in the Yellow Dress, SIMPLY IRRESISTABLE, the whole concept.
