In response to a negative thread about an ALL BLACK CAST OF KISS ME KATE IN PASADENA! WHICH IS WONDERFUL!
I would like to start an appreciation thread of a list of wonderful shows that can be done with an ALL BLACK CAST!
HELLO DOLLY
MUSIC MAN
ANNIE
Please add on maybe others will get the hint!
THE CRUCIBLE
WILDCAT
FIORELLO
TALK RADIO
I AM MY OWN WIFE
HUGH JACKMAN - BACK ON BROADWAY
GLORY DAYS
PACIFIC OVERTURES
An all-black production of ANNIE would be historically inaccurate. FDR was white.
It could be done, but you would look stupid.
Hairspray
700 Sundays starring Cedric The Entertainer, with special guest Madea.
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
THE KING AND I
WEST SIDE STORY
SOUTH PACIFIC
REDHEAD
FLOWER DRUM SONG
Also LIZA'S AT THE PALACE

RAGTIME
On a serious note, there is no need for an all black production of anything. I don't see anything wrong with colorblind casting so long as racial issues are not a major theme in the show. An all black cast is not color blind casting. Instead it is harkening back to the "blacksploitation" of the 70's. While this period did give us an amazing Dolly Levi, it also left a bad taste in the mouths of many in the African American population. Today this period in film and the arts is generally derided by most of the population.
RAGTIME wouldn't work, however RAGS would work brilliantly.
If you think that other thread was negative, you don't hang out here too much.

So wonderful you are saying it is wonderful before a single rehearsal has begun.
"HUGH JACKMAN - BACK ON BROADWAY"
Crying.
To add a serious thought to the thread...
I've always wanted to see an all-black presentation of Jesus Christ Superstar, with fresh musical arrangements reflecting current urban styles including not just the traditional rock sound, but also gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and maybe even rap in the appropriate setting. I hear Louis St. Louis came close with Jesus Christ Superstar: Gospel in Atlanta a few years ago, but I'd like to take it just a step further...
In seriousness, though. The only shows that need to have "all-black" revivals are the shows that originally had all-black casts on Broadway by intention. Of those, I would like to see revivals of:
ONCE ON THIS ISLAND
JELLY'S LAST JAM
BRING IN 'DA NOISE, BRING IN 'DA FUNK
and PORGY AND BESS (as long as they don't f****** eviscerate it like the most recent revival)
