I was reading this book where this person would write to famous people and museums to get paper clips from places. i thought it would be fun and I tried it.

The first autograph I ever got was Shuler Hensley when I saw YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN...I had just found out from the lady at the gift shop that your could wait outside the stage door for autographs...but everyone had left except Shuler....

I also have autographs from cast of Hairspray in September 2008 (Marissa Perry, Constantine Rousouli, Kate Loprest, Tevin Campbell, Karen Mason, and Niki Scalera)

I have autographs from the cast of "9 to 5" (including Allison Janney, Stephanie J. Block, and Megan Hilty)

I also have the cast of "Next To Normal" (sans Aaron Tveit since he left the day before my request had arrived, so I got Kyle Dean Massey instead).

Outside of Night Music, they've been selling copies of the libretto signed by Sondheim. I've been super tempted to buy one, but they go for $40. Do you feel it's worth the money?

Unless you're planning on selling it in the future, its worth is entirely dependent on what it's worth to you. If you're planning on selling it, probably not. If having his signature on the libretto is worth it TO YOU, then it's worth it. :)

So today I sent my first picture by mail to be autographed. I was wondering, do the celebrities themselves actually take time to do it, or do their agents do it for them?

^ It really depends on who you sent it too.

Several Hollywood celebrities do have secretaries sign items for them. I have found for the most part that if you send something to a theater, they will sign it themselves.
