I did not want to, and probably shouldn't, get involved in this thread, but may I just ask you who the "lot of the posters here" are that have actually seen ROA say it wasn't that great, because in all honesty I have seen more of the reverse. Most have liked it.

I have not seen Avenue Q nor will I because I just think all puppets are creepy. That's a personal choice for me.

However, given the fact he is a guy who really isn't into musicals but loves 80's music, is there really a doubt about taking him to see ROA?

I have a friend who dislikes musicals, but loves 80's music. I got him to go to see ROA as a favor to me because he knows I am a big Constantine fan. He called me at intermission and was raving about it!

Barney, I enjoyed your Shrek metaphor, even if CyCoSpAz2 didn't catch it. :)

Read Barney's post again, CyCoSpAz2. He was not bringing N2N into the discussion, he was using it as a sarcastic example of the stupidity of this discussion.

To the original poster... Take your friend to ROA, then if he likes that Ave Q is a great follow up... BABY STEPS.

My friend is just like your boyfriend (Thinks, Well now thought, that theatre was for girls)

I took him to see Avenue Q which he was VERY hesitant to to but in the end he wound up LOVING it and we have saw atleast 40 shows together since.

Whenever I want to take someone to a show I know they will love, I take them to Q.

7 for 7 isint a bad record.

Hyperbole. Learn it. I was making fun of you all. The OP hasn't SEEN Rock of Ages, of course she's leaning toward AQ. Thr simple fact of the matter is that the person she described will enjoy ROA more. It IS possible for some one to prefer hot chicks to puppets, especially someone who has never heard of BWW. This place is so myopic, it's sad.

I think this is great advice. Start off with the sure thing. Once he is warm to the idea of Broadway, follow that up with an excellent show and comedy. He'll be used to the idea of people singing for no real reason at that point. If he loved ROA, he should at least like AQ a lot, then you can probably talk him into Wicked if need be. But don't, that's just mean.

I'd go ROA-----> AQ --------> Jersey Boys.

its really a moot point arguing with a bunch of people who thought legally blonde was going to recoup and run for a long time.
it's really just easier to consider the sources.

If it's a straight guy who likes sports and beer take him to ROA hands down. It's a no-brainer.

First of all, for the original poster, Avenue Q has a good-sized fan base on here, so you are going to get many responses in favor of that (which you already have).

I have to agree with Barney Stinson. Based on the person she described, Rock of Ages seems like the most appropriate choice. Of course she is leaning more towards Avenue Q based on her own interests, but if she is trying to make her boyfriend happy, take him to what he may be interested in.

To the original poster: are you surprising your boyfriend? If not, why don't you just ask him what he might prefer? Give him a quick synopsis of each show and direct him to their websites. Let him listen to a couple of sound clips from each musical. I think if you let him have an idea of what he is getting into, you will have an easier time deciding which show to pick. We are not your boyfriend, so our interests aren't necessarily going to align with his.

i got tickets to avenue Q... 5th row center.

i started questioning it though so i looked just to see if RoA had any tickets for Sat night or Sun matinee, but they don't... so i guess we couldn't see it anyway.

it was hard to choose because i can't just be like "we'll go see something else next weekend." this is the first time he's gotten to come up and visit me. i rarely get to see him as he is stationed in florida in the hardest school in the Army: EOD school. Who knows the next time he'll be able to come up...

so basically i have one chance to introduce him to theatre... and i hope i'm not gonna blow it with Avenue Q

yeomansden- i had bought the ave Q tickets like 2 days ago... but i was regretting my decision today so i looked online to see if RoA had tickets but they didn't.. haha i wasn't trying to choose between a show with no tickets and ave Q

lol i guess i didn't phrase it correctly, but i can see how you'd think that haha

No, you cannot get your tickets refunded, but you can try to sell them.

May I ask how you couldn't find two tickets for this Sunday (I didn't check Saturday evening)? I searched full-price tickets in the orchestra, but wasn't sure if you had a certain bracket you searched in that prevented you from finding tickets. For example, the cheaper seats in the rear mezzanine might be sold out.

on ticketmaster, for saturday night and sunday matinee the only two options were VIEW TIMES. you couldn't click FIND TICKETS like you could for the other times.

There are two shows on Saturday and Sunday, if you click on view times, the times pop up, and you can click the one you want tickets for.

The reason why they have VIEW TIMES is because Saturday and Sunday each have a matinee and evening show. The other days of the week only have one performance, which is why they list FIND TICKETS (there isn't more than one time to view).

I was able to see Ave. Q for the first time last night. What a charming and clever show! I liked it very much but IMO ROA is the show for you, and then perhaps Ave. Q. Anika Larson was the standout for me, btw.

Maybe the discussion is moot at this point - aren't you going tonight?
