I feel like they could condense Beau to a pretty short cameo, get someone like Robert Duvall to do it, and make everyone wish the whole scene was in.

The role of Ivy is cast. I'm imagining they'll announce who's doing it this coming week.

I have no idea if they've settled on a Mattie Fae yet, but it's definitely not Melissa Leo (who'd have been great opposite Streep.)

Glinda i don't mean to sound stupid but there really aren't too many 'name' american Indian actresses. She almost has to be a unknown and i think it works better if she is a unknown, it's a small role but a crucial one. She has to call these people on their **** and i don't think she could credibly do this if she was a name . Where as she could as an unknown.

Bev has Sam Shepard written all over him. Tommy Lee Jones and Stacey Keach would also be very good.

I saw Breslin as Jean coming. Although, I thought perhaps, with time flying, she might not be young enough; but I'm probably wrong on that. I was hoping they would have cast Hailee Steinfeld as Jean, but Breslin is certainly a good choice.

On another subject, Ivys problem is not that she is downright ugly or homely, it's her own lack of confidence. If you remember the first time we see her Mattie Fae and Violet and talking about how much prettier she would look if she dressed right or wore some makeup etc.

I agree, isn't there a line about Ivy being the prettiest of the sisters? I never think that her issue has to do with looks, it has a lot to do with her lack of confidence, and also the fact that she's weirdly genuinely in love with Little Charles. The tragedy of the play is that they are the only couple that's actually in love and the only one that really cannot be together. I wonder how the film will handle Ivy's ending, since in the play it's left to the audience to figure out what she does or how her relationship with Little Charles ends.

I'd actually be shocked if that scene is included in the film. I'd say it's almost certain to be cut.

I really hope they don't cut the Prologue, it's perfect in the way it establishes so much about this house, these characters, and the legend of Bev that we get to learn about throughout the play. It'd be great if Wells decided to start the film with the Prologue, cut to the opening credits and then start the film. It could also work as a flashback told from Johnna's perspective. We'll see, so excited about all the casting news. Can't wait to hear who's playing Ivy and Mattie Fae (add me to those who are happy it is not Melissa Leo).

I don't think you can cut the prologue either ray, I do think it could work the way it is and then just have a time jump. Yes their is a line about Ivy being the pretty sister but that since she has such low self esteem and doesn't even dress up or put on makeup she looks homely.

I know there is the "pretty sister" line, but you can take the make up off of Nicole Kidman but she's still looks like Nicole Kidman and I'd refuse to believe that NO OTHER MAN has ever liked her. I'm now expecting a pretty girl since she has to be prettier than Roberts. As long as they're talented, I guess...

I definitely think the opening scene will be included To some extent. Definitely not in its entirety, but a condensed version probably. There's too much necessary exposition (Bev and Vi's relationship, their shared destructive behavior, the drugs Vi takes, Vi's cancer, what Johnna is even doing in the house, etc.) to leave it out. Granted, it could be redistributed throughout the script, and some of it is explained later on as well, but it sets us up and I think it's an important scene.

I'm still gunning for Kathy Bates. Especially now that her show has been cancelled.

Kathy Bates has already said she wasn't doing it, sadly. Jessica Lange might be an interesting choice for that role. (But to be fair, I want to see Jessica Lange in everything)

lots of interesting possibilities for Ivy but I have to say that Winona Ryder is the best. She's vulnerable, the whole world knows she's very pretty, she can easily play down her looks, and it would be great to see her be ace Ivy's comic moments.

All this talk of looks fails to consider that actresses can tone down and tone up. If Charlize Theron was believable in Monster, Julia Roberts can be believable in August. Not to mention this is material geared for an audience sophisticated enough to hopefully understand that people leave people for reasons other than looks, especially in a long relationship rife with mid life crisis. Anyone who can't deal with that as a consideration is unlikely to be interested in this story.

Wow. Thanks for telling me, Jordan. Had no idea Kathy Bates had personally addressed her casting in this. That's a bummer.

On a more positive note, Jean Smart would be 1) a riot and 2) a perfect match for Meryl.

It might be major overcasting, but Cate Blanchett would be a pretty terrific Ivy.
