An actress who only appeared on Broadway once in a very short-lived musical titled Christine back in 1960. She was also originally cast as Anna Leonowens in the 1956 film adaptation of The King & I, before Richard Rodgers disagreed to the casting.
Throughout her career, she never received an Academy Award nomination. It was only earlier this year when she earned an Honorary Oscar from the Academy

Lots of Boomers remember her as the mother of Sharon and Susan in the original Disney film The Parent Trap. A feel-good film in 1961.
From the princess-like persona of elegant Brit Hayley Mills to Lindsay Lohan.
There's a trip through several generations.

How eerie, I was just watching her in Hunchback of Notre Dame yesterday. Sad to hear she's gone, but she lived a long good life.
Wonder why Rodgers vetoed her casting as Anna, I would have loved to see her take.

Such sad news. I loved her as an actress. And she was absolutely gorgeous. She will be missed.

To answer your question Mr. Nowack, the reason Richard Rodgers vetoed the idea of Maureen O'Hara as Anna is because while he viewed her as having a lovely singing voice, he hated the idea of having a "pirate queen" as his Anna so they kept searching until Yul Brynner told them about Deborah Kerr, who I think is perfect casting despite being dubbed by Marni Nixon.
But O'Hara was still a wonderful, beautiful, powerful actress until the day she died. May she rest in peace.

I seem to recall a Frank Sinatra connection but can't find it on the Web. Am I all wet, or was she involved with Sinatra?

^ Are you possibly confusing her with Maureen O'Sullivan, mother of Mia Farrow, Frank's third wife?

Madam, I rarely discuss any possible affairs involving those I love and respect, myself having been linked unjustly with so many women. Most are aware of the only woman who ever got "under my skin" and stayed there for a such a long, long time. But my best known connection with Miss O'Hara was in 1976 when I was hosting a tribute to John Wayne and had the opportunity to introduce this lovely and luminous actress and singer as she joined the tribute in song.
It was with "the Duke" that Miss O'Hara co-starred in five well-loved films and of whom she once said "I was tough. I was tall. I was strong. I didn't take any nonsense from anybody. He was tough, he was tall, he was strong and he didn't take any nonsense from anybody. As a man and a human being, I adored him."
Rumor, and only rumor, suggest that John Wayne was the man with whom she might have shared intimacy.
