Thank you for reminding me the main criteria for a Tony nomination. I stand corrected.

Absolutely - and I say this as a great fan of hers - NOT!

Stockard Channing could happen for It's Only a Play. is she lead in that ?

I also don't see Stockard Channing being nominated for It's Only A Play. She was very good but too many other choices in showier roles.

Just found this thread. But even as a huge Fleming fan, I can't see her being nominated. Also, I'll be surprised if Close isn't nominated, given the praise for her performance, combined with the propensity to nominate stars.

The only people i can see being nominated over Fleming are the ladies in Hand to God if they are even considered leading. Both are fantastic, but I highly doubt Close will be nominated over Fleming because Close was in the fall, and Renee sings opera throughout the show. Plus, people have been saying she's great, and I'm sure her performance will just keep getting better as she listens to the audiences and takes direction. Thats why theres previews!!
"combined with the propensity to nominate stars"
Fleming is a star too. I dont really think Close beats her out that much in terms of famousness. Plus, how is nominating stars really helping the Tonys? Maybe if youre Meryl Streep fame status which Close definitely isnt.

People don't get nominated just because they're famous. Otherwise, we all would've seen Orlando Bloom, Zach Braff, Toni Collette, Daniel Craig, James Franco, Michael C. Hall, Ian McKellen, Debra Messing, Zachary Quinto, Daniel Radcliffe, Patrick Stewart, Marisa Tomei, Denzel Washington, Rachel Weisz, and/or Michelle Williams nominated last year.

Dame Helen Mirren & Carey Mulligan...tight race for the Tony win as both received raves!

I hope they tie and Fleming wins :)
I <3 her

If Fleming is nominated, it will be because of her stature in the opera world, not because she is turning in a particularly award-worthy performance. She isn't. The most that can be said is that she is better than probably many are expecting her to be. But she is turning in an above-adequate turn in a play that is mostly adequate.

Coming from someone who saw, what, the 2nd performance? Especially when its a comedy, previews (audiences) are EVERYTHING.
"If Fleming is nominated, it will be because of her stature in the opera world."
So how do you explain Denzel Washington and James Franco not being nominated last year? And many other big famous people not getting nominations who are more famous than Renee Fleming. I think she will be nominated because she deserves it. Plus, like I said before, she will grow and grow as the show gets better, and they listen to the audiences.

At this moment, I'd say Mirren and Mulligan are fully in, with Ruth Wilson right on the doorstep. Geneva Carr and Lydia Leonard could make the field depending on what categories they end up in. Elizabeth Moss will hope her reviews are enough, and they well may be, but I don't sense any heat over that production. And then Fleming, whom I wouldn't expect to have a shot at a nomination, sight unseen, but who clearly has her ardent fans, has to climb over all of them as well as Close.

She already performed the role last summer. She is not going to become a comedic revelation in two more weeks, nor will the play.
And are you actually holding the fact I saw the show in previews against my opinion- you, who have not seen it at all?
I'm not going to discuss it further because there's no point discussing much of anything with you. You hold the same opinion regardless of what information presents itself and are thoroughly incapable of considering other options, and you seem to have a total lack of desire to challenge yourself.

Says the person who says that if she's nominated it will be because she's an opera star. They wouldn't nominate freaking Denzel Washington but they will nominate Renee Fleming just because she's a diva.

Im just stating facts. You don't like to hear the facts. People have been saying that she's great in the show. I didn't see it, but it doesn't matter when we are talking about what OTHER people think. Also, like I said before, previews (audiences) are crucial with comedies. They will get better when they learn from the audiences.
jnb9872, how is it sight unseen? The lady has been acting for years. Not in comedies, but people make it seem like she is not an actor. Opera singers ARE, in fact, actors. The whole "i was surprised she was good" thing is absolutely ridiculous to me.

So... then there's consensus basically on this?
Helen Mirren
Carey Mulligan
Ruth Wilson
Plus - possibly Moss, Close, Leonard, Carr, Fleming

I think Moss is in, Close is out. The other 3 will have to battle it out for the last spot. Ive heard they are all fantastic. Being a huge Renée Fleming fan, I hope its her, and think she will take the last spot too.

Philly, the sentence fragment I wrote is as follows:Fleming, whom I wouldn't expect to have a shot at a nomination, sight unseen
Forgive my excessive use of commas (which, I admit, I use flagrantly - almost as much as parentheticals), but clearly I am referring to the fact that I myself have not seen Fleming's performance and was not expecting her to have a shot at a nomination.
The reasons being, among many others: the play looks slight, it had little to no buzz coming out of Williamstown, I had even forgotten it played there already, and her competition is very acclaimed and very experienced. Frankly, just grouping Fleming in with Close is a sign of great respect; I still don't think either of them will get nominated. But, for the record, I think Close has a better shot than Fleming of being on the right side of that line.

Facts? Since when do you care about facts, when you literally argued against the facts of Honeymoon's finances for weeks?! When, whenever you argue anything, you just boil down to "i'm right and you're sooo wrong lol"?
Here are some things people are saying about the show on this board! And these reflect the majority opinion! Enjoy these "facts."
" I wish her acting choices had been stronger."
"The show just got out. I thought it was "ok"."
"I just remembered I saw the show tonight. As Jordan said it was "ok". It had some cute moments and some nice small directorial touches, but entirely predictable. Sills is the highlight."
" Renee Flemming did pretty well"
" Fleming is fine, but you're relying on the meta joke that she really is an opera star. She could really pile on the melodrama to match Sills' hamminess. "
"Are there some funny lines and situations? Absolutely. Is it a hoot watching Fleming play a heightened version of herself? Absolutely. Does it wear out its welcome pretty quickly? Absolutely."

lol i never said Honeymoon was doing good at the box office. You're also choosing those quotes. Ive read that whole thread and there are many positive things about the show and Renee. Plus, none of those quotes are really nothing bad anyway. Like I said, its a comedy, previews are everything.
I see Leonard or Carr taking the last spot over Close. I really don't see her getting a nomination for some reason. I don't really think that show will be getting any tony love. Plus, it was so long ago

When you have four ladies who get good (or glowing) praise in shows that got likewise good (or glowing) reviews, and two more likely to match that quartet when their shows open in the coming weeks, "nothing bad" is not the feedback you need to bolster your chances for a five-person field.

I know, but those are the worst quotes he could get. If you read that whole thread about Living on Love, many people really loved it. If those are the worst quotes he could get...well damn. Plus, they still have 2 full weeks of previews and for the millionth time, previews are everything with comedies. It is just going to get better and better and better
