Besty, that was...well, the best.
I wonder which one of them will be the first to turn up as Billy Flynn in the CHICAGO revival.
absurd.
Are we not counting the movie?
Or all the PR **** they did around that time?
Or the book Anthony put out that basically rides on the coat-tails of RENT?
I'm sorry, its not like they've just come back and done this show twice.
They've clearly riden this show hard and put it away wet.
Well, hey, the good thing about playing those huge touring houses is that people won't be able to see all those god-awful wrinkles on their faces from so far away!
No, seriously, anyone who saw them this summer will tell you that they don't look a day over 25.
And I'm really happy for the guy who's going to be the last Mark. I'm also really glad they cast an unknown and are, at least once more, making a return to finding fresh talent for the show.
Except they are now way too old for the roles. It's past time they said goodbye to Rent and did something else.
Seriously, half of the Marks and Rogers they've cast recently have been older than Adam and Anthony, and it didn't bother anybody. Do your research before throwing out these ridiculous statements.

It's not like a performer coming back and back to their most successful show is unheard of...
Carol Channing and HELLO, DOLLY?
Robert Goulet and CAMELOT?
Jennifer Holliday and DREAMGIRLS?

Yikes, didn't we just do this a couple months ago? I can't remember one source, be it professional reviews, bloggers, or just people who actually saw them in the show, who had any complaints that they looked too old to be playing people in their twenties.

Are you honestly using Jennifer Holliday playing Efie almost consistently from the opening of the show on Broadway until today as an example of a good career move? I'm sorry, but IMO, any way you cut it, it just looks desperate.
Coming back to the show 10 years later to do the movie with the OBC: understandable.
Coming back 11 years later to close the show on Broadway: sure.
Touring with the show after its toured the US how many times?

Where did I ever say it was a good career move? That's right. I didn't.
Greekmusicalfan - I thought the same thing. He's one of the hotter Marks they've cast. He almost looks like a younger version of Michael Greif in that photo.
Heh. That's why he's the first new Mark cast in years; it's a vanity thing.
This is hilarious.
You forgot Yul Brenner in "The King and I". He milked that baby till the day he died almost.
Anyway, I for one think it's a good thing that Broadway Actors in general come out for tours. A lot of times, tours coming trough are either non-equity, or you get C-List celebs (was my first live "Chicago" experience really with Alan Thicke as Billy Flynn???)
Many around the country often do not have the luxury of flying to New York, but fall in love with cast album recordings, stuff featured on the Tony Awards, and snippets from video websites (to remain unnamed). To get actual cast members from the actual Broadway show to come around is a rare occasion. The last time I can remember seeing a touring show that featured a lead that was with the show on Broadway was "Kiss of the Spider Woman" with Chita Rivera!!!
So what if it's 12 years later. Is it really a shame to revisit your past?
"Are we not counting the movie?"
Well that was originally Chris Columbus' decicion, true they could have declined, but what smart actor wouldn't? A chance to get back with the old gang to film a mainstream Hollywood movie adaptation of the show that changed your life in many ways. You gotta pay the bills, and, well, would you turn it down?
"Or all the PR **** they did around that time?"
PR is pretty much mandatory for mainstream Hollywood releases, it's not like they pulled a Mariah and stormed talk shows unannounced to whore the movie.
"Or the book Anthony put out that basically rides on the coat-tails of RENT?"
What, a guy's not allowed to write a memoir? RENT was a big moment of his career and his personal life. These were the people who worked with Jon, who knew him, who were good friends with him, who helped him build his dream back in NYTW, and Anthony was one of the first. It might not have been a very well written show, but the spirit that Jon had, the influence he made on the cast and the overnight sensation the show became, coupled with the loss of his mom pinpoints a pivitol moment in Anthony's life. Doing the film brought those memories back so, being a writer, he dicided to write an autobigraphy.
I don't know if it's a good book, I haven't read it, but I think where it came from is honest.
I'm not a fanatic Renthead, I enjoy the show, I've really only seen it live once, and I do agree it's been running for too long. But I believe Adam and Anthony are not doing this just to ride the coatails of the show, it was important to them and they made many friends out of it (each other especially), so they want one last chance to commemorate it. Is it a good career move, probably not, would they be better off developing their talent and career by doing something new, definatley. But if they wanna do it...let em, all power to them. Why not let them go back and celebrate for awhile and give people a chance to see the original roles.
I hope I get a chance to see them. For the same reason I wanted to see Ted Neely in Superstar....cos it's them.
Maybe one of us will get a PM asking us to change our views on how we see this!!!

Can't wait to see them. Their age doesn't make a difference.
And so what if they want to reprise their roles. Obviously they enjoy it or they wouldn't come back. I believe that the original members of the cast had a strong bond; united by Jonathan Larson's death and the desire to "do right" by his work. The characters are a big part of their lives. So why wouldn't they want to recapture those good feelings again?
Welcome back, Adam and Anthony!
Its sad to me that they can't get anything else going for themselves....
All this talk about how it is sad that they have to do this because they can't do anything else is kind of silly. Since they agreed to do it so far in advance suggests that it is something they really want to do. My hunch is that, for Pascal at least, it is an opportunity to do something he has never done before (a tour, not Rent, of course). Also, I am sure the producers might have made an offer that they just couldn't refuse. Nothing wrong with that, you know.
Remember this is what Adam and Anthony do for WORK..this is how they get their paychecks...support their families, pay their bill/taxes...just like the rest of us have to do. THIS IS A JOB.
Someone offers you probably a large amount of cash to go do something you like and can do well, would you turn it down? Doubt it.

I never challenged the idea of doing the film. Getting the OBC together to do the film was the right thing to do (even though the film was crap and many of their performances didn't transfer well to film).
What, a guy's not allowed to write a memoir?
Sure he is. Is he allowed to conveniently release it within the same months of when the film adaptation of the show which comprises a fair amount of the book is released without being called out on it? No.

That's all I was saying was "absurd" about this. I think they are great talents but have pigeon-holed themselves.
This has made my week! One of the funniest threads I've ever read, this comment is only really to give best12bars a cookie:

I am a huge (read obbsesive)fan of RENT, and Adam in particular. And if he wants to go back to RENT, good for him. But if they can't get any other work then thats a bit sad, cause he's so talented, I'd love to see him in something else..
Oh wait, I am (Chess concert

logan, wow. why is it so terrible that anthony made a smart move in publishing the book at a time when rent would be highly advertised? to me, it would seem like he was, well you know, trying to make the book sell and become a success. but wait, of course he had no hopes to sell the book. and he should have published it at a less opportune time...
come on.

That's just ridiculous. Releasing a book at a viable time for sales, with the Rent connection as the only real way to sell it, is not disproportionately crass marketing. It's just the common business sense required for publishing a book.
