Crazy to think this almost went to Bway but was cancelled by covid. I’m glad too — it wasn’t ready.
I saw it in Boston and enjoyed it, however the female lead gave one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen on stage. Perhaps it was an off night but she was wooden, had a horrid accent, and strange line readings.

They were midway through their first day of tech at the Lyceum when they got the call to stop working. Even the cast album released a few weeks later is officially labeled “Original Broadway Cast.”
Saw this a bunch at NYTW and then in Boston—I think it’s an excellent show, and they did a decent amount of work on it for Boston that helped it soar. The demand just never seemed to be there, but glad it’s going to London.
Reminds me of the similar timing of The Secret Life of Bees, another 2019 Off-Broadway musical destined for Broadway that never materialized beyond an eventual London run. Interesting to see how the landscape has changed in 5 years. Crazy to think of what the industry would be like if Covid had never happened.

it's Enda Walsh, not Edna. feels like an autocorrect fail?

I never got to see this in any other incarnation but caught it in London this week and man, I fell in love with it. I’m a huge huge fan of the film and I think it serves the source material extremely well and the changes for the stage all work for me. The cast - man I don’t even have words for how much I loved Sheridan Townsley’s Conor. Such a special performance I’ll really be forever grateful I got to see live.
I obviously can’t help but wonder how this show would have fared on Broadway or if it could still have a shot. I think it could find an audience but a theatre like the Lyceum where it was originally booked would have been the shows downfall. But I’d love for this to come back to NYC, I think given the right marketing push it could be quite successful.
I thought it was super underbaked at NYTW and, had it been able to transfer at the time as planned, likely would've fallen very flat on Broadway. I hope they've used the intervening years wisely to work on it.
Totally forgot that they released the recording. Listening to it now while cooking and really enjoying it. I usually have MTV's I Want My 80's on the TV on Sundays so this is perfect!
I honestly had no memory of a cast recording ever being released so when I got very excited, leaving the theatre and searching itunes for the movie soundtrack to listen to some of the songs.
Agreed. I adored this show in Boston (despite the lead actress who gave one of the worst lead performances I’ve ever seen). It did rush to Broadway after its NYTW run, but here is something magical here and I hope they can find a venue that supports it.

I saw this 2 weeks ago (on my first London theatre trip in over 10 years!) and found it to be completely mediocre with an awkward book and staging. Definitely some song changes compared to the cast recording that was released but I didn't buy a program to see the song list. Just made me want to watch the movie again, which I love. The cast of mostly young performers was excellent though. FYI, my London highlights were Evita and Benjamin Button. Both of those were so great!!!
