Where exactly was the Jewel Box? Doesn't Paul refer to that in A Chorus Line? It was on 42nd, immediately west of Broadway in a three story building torn down in the mid 80s, I think. It was up a flight of stairs, and it was the dingiest, most pathetic stage in all of New York -- which, at that time, was pretty sad. In essence, it was a stripper revue, with the occasional drag queen (I guess to give it some class), and the... uhm... "performers" would wander out into the audience for anyone who wanted a... er... closer look, as it were. Rumour has it that the place has been around since the 40s, which would technically make it the longest running show in Broadway history.
Friends took me there for my 21st birthday. I never, ever forgave them.
