Wow. This makes me sad. It obviously doesn't change how I feel about the show. I thought Sienna was stunning. But it's sad that none of these critics liked it. I hope it doesn't discourage Sienna from returning to Broadway and giving it another go.
Thank God it wasn't ALL pans...

It makes me sad that so many people believe the critics without question. The play and the London production got fine reviews. Don't tell me some plays don't travel. A good play is a good play period. And if it isn't, then there's something the matter. If I want to see a Bdwy show I see it and make up my own mind. In general critics fall into two types. There is the critic who ponderously at length gives us his/her take on the show, as though the shows were put on just so we could read and discuss his/her review. Then there is the other kind who spends an inordinate amount of time outlining the plot but fills in with sarcastic comments that he/she believes make the column witty and enjoyaable but in the end are just boringly annoying. If there is a critic out there who doesn't subscribe to either of these schools of criticism, one whom I can respect, please let me know. I do believe NYC Bdwy critics have a lot to answer for.
Chalk me up among the folks who found this a stimulating production.
Of course Brantley didn't like it. How could you ever like ANYTHING when you saw the--bow your head, clutch your pearls, give yip-like inhale--Lonnndunnn production.
Seriously, why doesn't he just move to London for Chrissakes?
Oh, and the reliable David Cote from Time Out NY gave it a rave.
