I think no one wants to admit it but Aladdin got better reviews than we thought it would get and that's the reason why its getting nominated. But it must have been a mixed times review its not a critics pick.

I also think that people hate Disney as its a big cooperate company and for this exact reason people attack Disney whither its good or not. People just attack big companies because they choose too they would do it even if its the best production ever written. I personally think people should stop attacking big companies for no reason. I personally think the attacks are shallow and un called for

WHAT are you talking about? I truly do not understand either of your posts. No one knows what is getting nominated, and truly, that doesn't prove quality at all. Heck, Leap of Faith was nominated which was one of the worst things I've ever seen on b'way.

Many people here have enjoyed Aladdin.

Eh. The version at Disneyland was better- more imaginatively staged, the carpet flew over the audience and it was only 45 minutes.

While her whither's whither with her?

Anyway, the only reason I'm going to see Aladdin is because my friend is dragging me to it. I've never been a big fan of animated films, even when I was younger I preferred Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. But I love The Lion King on Broadway so I shall keep an open mind. I'd rather see Bridges 34534 times than Aladdin once, though.

Oh come on. Did you see Aladdin? In a season of lackluster musicals (I've seen every show), it was the only show where I left with a smile on my face. So it's Disney. They've had some hits and some misses. This one IMO is a hit.

How many other shows this season have you attended where there has been a standing ovation, after a production number?

It's getting nominated because it's a good show. That's all.

The ONLY show? Really? You didn't smile after seeing Beautiful or Gentleman's Guide or After Midnight? If that's the case, you have no taste.

That's called pandering. They threw everything they had into ONE production number to cover up the rest of the flaws in that production. In fact, the first half of act one of Aladdin was SOOOOO boring until Friend Like Me. Other show creators didn't have to rely on a showstopper to make their shows bearable.

I will concede there were many standing ovations throughout the evening at Aladdin but mostly from young children who were restless and couldn't sit still.

Disney as its a big cooperate company

What is a "cooperate company" exactly?

And why is this thread called "Aladdin-Reviews 2"? You haven't provided a review. Just some nonsensical babble based on nothing.

First half of act one, huh? So "Arabian Nights", "One Jump Ahead", "Proud of Your Boy", "These Palace Walls", "Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim", "A Million Miles Away", "Diamond in the Rough" was boring? Okay, then.

Beautiful is only enjoyable because you can hum the songs that have been around for 40 years. Other than that SNOOZEFEST! The book is AWEFUL and the choreo could have been done by a 2 year old. If not for Jessie Mueller the entire thing would be a mess.

Were people this cynical and negative about Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King?

I think Adam Jacobs is looking good for a Tony nom on Tuesday.

I don't think people are necessarily cynical about Aladdin. Most people on here liked it for what it was - a slick, fast, and colorful production for families.

But, remember that Lion King was groundbreaking and visually stunning and BBAB was a good show. They set the bar high.

Since then we've had Tarzan and The Little Mermaid which have devalued Disney's theatrical credibility.

I would be surprised if Adam Reed gets a nom, but the show, the score, Igleheart, costumes, and lighting are probably going to get recognized.

....but the world goes 'round

Saw Aladdin last night (May 6) front row Mezz in my $85 early discount promo ticket purchased back in December.

Although not as great as Lion King or Beauty and the Beast it was thankfully much better than The Little Mermaid, Mary Poppins (tried it twice - still didn't love it) and Tarzan.

Loved the costumes.

Loved the lighting.

Loved the sets but qualify that just a bit with some minor disappointment. When Disney threw money at the scenery - they dumped money on it. Then a few times I noticed a let down when a transitional Palm tree flat was used.

Overall the colors of the three (costumes, lighting and scenery) were great, bright not as garish as they appear in the souvenir book that I flipped through. In person they were exciting and enjoyable.

Loved that there was an overture and an entr'acte but disappointed that the audience continued to talk even louder over the music until the curtain went up!

The songs...sigh...the familiar songs from the animated feature were the best part. The new songs that were picked up off the floor of the animation studio floor should have remained there. When they were being performed the show dragged and I found them to be boring. Made me not wonder why they weren't in the animated feature.

A Whole New World...again - kudos to the scenery, loved the transition to this song. I felt the romance blossoming when he held his hand out and said "Do you trust me?" right before the song started. Scenery flew away. I was ok with the giant planet and flashing stars. What ruined it? A lackluster vocal performance. Aladdin was fair and did a decent job overall. Jasmine was better than I previously read reviews by others. By the end of the show they did convincingly convey that they fell in love but A Whole New World just wasn't the moment I hoped it to be.

Genie - words cannot express what a stunning performance this guy is delivering. He has the costume, the entrances, the crazy exciting over the top mannerisms - fantastic and a stunning reason to see this show. "Friend Like Me" in the Cave of Wonders was the knockout equivalent of Beauty and the Beast's "Be Our Guest". I did not want it to end. Whenever James Monroe Inglehart was on stage you were clamoring for more. I am not going to give the spoiler but his line as they exit the Cave of Wonders made me scream out loud in laughter and applause. Too many of the jokes in the entire show were knew slap groan worthy (the audience ate it up though) however, this particular line using a quote from a viral video was genius.

Abu - didn't miss him and he is a favorite of mine in the movie.

Iago not being a parrot was not a problem at all. Totally loved Don Darryl Rivera. His costume, mannerism, vocal delivery, etc. Very enjoyable performance.

Jafar...at intermission I double checked to make sure that I didn't miss an understudy slip. I wasn't believing that I was actually seeing him. Thought his performance would have been much better. Although good...it was certainly not Tony worthy and therefore why a nomination wasn't received.

The different ending on stage versus the animated feature - completely worked for me. I didn't miss Jafar being transformed into the giant snake. What they did worked really well. Loved that Genie acknowledged it as part of a lyric at the end of the show too. The costume changes to make the moments happen were good.

I would not purchase the cast album when it comes out nor would I need to return to this show even though there are probably 4 big "wow" production numbers. Tourists and families will keep this open for a while.
