Alter Boys -- yuck!

Okay, I only wish I was sitting on the aisle on Sunday night so I could have left after about the third song. This show is tragic and I'll never recover the 90 minutes I spent watching that show. The concept is dated (didn't boy bands go out about five years ago?); it's not funny (well, maybe it is for one or two songs); and the gay character's coming out is completely cliche.

Talented cast but a waste of time. Ugh!

SF, you're not alone. I hated it, too.

re: Alter Boys -- yuck!

I have a rather intense dislike of boybands and such...but I saw the Altar Boyz performance at the Broadway In Bryant concert. I wasn't expecting to like it, but I did. Now, I probably wouldn't go see the show itself...I already have a long enough list of shoulds to get to...but I did enjoy what little I heard and saw of it.

Thanks babe--you beat me to it. If you're gonna rip a show apart, at least get the spelling right?

re: Alter Boys -- yuck!

If you saw the show with the original cast and hated it, I'd be the first one to question your taste and tell you that you were in a MINISCULE minority. HOWEVER, if you saw it with the most recent cast and hated it, I'd still disagree with you, but to a MUCH lesser extent. The show with its most recent actors is less than stellar- the chemistry between the actors is off, and the newbies don't even come near the calibre of their predecessors (or hell- their predecssors' understudies). The show actually becomes boring at points, which never happened with the original cast. This naturally affects the presentation of the material, and a lot of the clever dialogue as well as clever songwriting is unfortunately lost due to poor acting choices.

Yeah, too bad you missed the original cast. I think they really made the show, IMHO.

re: Altar Boyz

I saw this show a couple of weekends ago, and to be honest, I was cringing through a lot of the humor. I'd say it took until about halfway through before I think it finally won me over and I wasn't regretting paying even half price to see it, but by the end, I was more satisfied than not. I definitely wouldn't want to pay full price for it, though.

re: Altar Boyz

WOW! I love the show. I think it pulls off what it sets out to do. Also walking out during a performance even if you are on "the aisle" is so rude. I'd think twice about it it is very hurtful to the actors. Once again I love the show

re: Altar Boyz

I absolutely adore this show. Did you go last night? I'm only asking that because the two new members of the cast just started. I don't find the concept to be dated, because everyone remembers boy bands and remembers the phenomenon. It's really just a question of taste, I guess.

Also, if you're gonna say you really disliked a show, at least be a little more specific. "The content was dated", "tragic", and "unfunny" really don't tell you anything.

re: Altar Boyz

I find the show to be very entertaining. Granted, I cannot listen to the recording. The music is obnoxious unless heard within the context of the show. I find the new cast members to be great. Danny Calvert, the new Mark, is outstanding!

re: Altar Boyz

Danny Calvert is GREAT as Mark. And I think this show is so much fun.

Songs obnoxious? Yes...but I still love listening to them! haha

I found the show very witty, and extremely wonderful. But I saw it with the original cast.

re: Altar Boyz

I haven't seen the show yet, because I've been really cautious about it (I'm not going to shell out that much money to see anything, and I've alway hated boy bands); and now that the orginal cast isn't there, I doubt I'll ever go (I might though... should I?).

No story? Did you sleep between the songs or something? cause there was a story.

re: Altar Boyz

I loved the show. I saw it with the original cast and it was hysterical. I'd be willing to go see it again.

re: Altar Boyz

It's less of a musical that people are expecting it to be. You might be more satisfied if you go in expecting a MadTV-type spoof of a christian boy band.

re: Altar Boyz

The thing with Altar Boyz? You can't take it seriously. I mean, it has it's touching moments and it's serious moments, but overall.. you just CAN'T take it seriously. Otherwise you won't find it funny. They're supposed to be mocking boybands. Do any of you remember 2ge+her? They became huge and they weren't even a real boyband! People loved them because they were mocking other boybands. :P

Or at least that's my opinion on the whole thing. Either way, I love the show and I love the music. re: Altar Boyz It makes me feel like a stupid little 12 year old fangirl again. Haha. *Clings to childhood*

re: Altar Boyz

I thought it was TREMENDOUSLY funny. I was raised Catholic so perhaps that had something to do with it. I thought it also had a lot to say about religious institutions.

Oh well, it just musical comedy.

Just my opinion, I may be wrong.

re: Altar Boyz

Why would your opinion be wrong? It'll be different from someone else's, but it's not wrong. :)

The last time I saw the show, I was sitting next to this girl who was a Catholic and she about fell out of her seat laughing at every little thing. She thought it was hilarious. Not to mention she was raised on boybands, so that was a double-hit with her. Ha.

re: Altar Boyz

Zoran - Thank you for that post. I listened to the recording while in NYC in May and was going to see it as a friend there LOVED it! After listening to it, I decided not to go. I really did not like what I heard. I thought "Well maybe I will enjoy it if I actually see it". I may give it a shot now when I am back there in the fall.
