I take it up a notch, and if I can't (by craning my neck around to see to Playbill cover) tell what show it is they attended, I'll just ask. Makes for some great conversations, especially on long subway rides.
Good thread! I have always thought the same thing. I always give an extra glance to see what Playbill someone is holding.
And do we judge those who have seen something we detest? Or discreetly envy those who saw something we couldn't get tickets for?
A million years ago, in pre-AIDS, pre-Giuliani, pre-Disney New York there existed many bathouses where gay men would go and, well, you know. Kind of like THE RITZ without the floor show.
There was a rather strange unwritten code of behavior at these places, such as no talking in the locker room (this is for those of us who were too poor or too cheap to get a room). For some reason, while getting out of your street clothes and into your towel, silence was the rule.
Anyway, one night after the theatre back in 1980 (right after they invented electricty), I went to the old Club Baths on First and First . Changing his clothes a few lockers down was a big leather-bear daddy type, all scowly and stern looking. I took off my overcoat (I guess it was winter) and, in the process of folding it up, my Playbill fell onto the floor. Immediately, my neighbor turned from Scowling Leather Daddy to Screaming Show Queen, lunging over to pick up the Playbill while squealing 'Ooooh, what did you SEEEEEEE?'
So yes, like mens rooms, we all peek.
Oh hushpuppy, that made my night! Thanks for that!
Mine,too!!!
I do that all the time.
Glad to know that I'm not the only one here who does this.
Mrs R loves to do it.
Me, I like to carry a Playbill from a closed show & have people scratch their heads saying "What the ****"

haha I've never seen that!
One time I was carrying my In The Heights playbill and these girls who had just seen Grease gave me the biggest "WTF?!" look
Let me know how it turns out
Try using one from a bomb like Lestat or DOTV
ANother one is if you have a Minelli on Minelli Playbill browse thru it while seated watching her new show.
Definitely not. I love taking little peeks at people's Playbills. If I happen to catch someone's eye, I just give them a smile and ask how it was.
