Question: Can she actually SING the part of Penny or are they going to dub her? Or are they just going to lower things for her to sing like they did for Uma Thurman in The Producers? (not like that helped her performance, in my opinion.)
Just curious because I can see her playing Penny based on personality/looks alone, but you have to really be able to sing to play that part and I've never heard of her having the pipes to do it.

The singing is definitely a worry...
Not to mention the ACTING! She's one of the worst young actresses around today. (Did you see "What a Girl Wants"?) Lousy, lousy actress. (If you watch that movie again, all she does is a bad Jennifer Aniston impersonation throughout the entire film.)
Let's give her the benefit of the doubt and hope that the director will get something good out of her.

I would disagree with this statement. I think she is a very good character actress. I have a feeling she will be a very good Penny (assuming she can do the music). Acting for her should not be a concern.

I'm only going to post this once...
People were UP IN ARMS (not here per se, but on other chat boards) about the casting of the movie CHICAGO and ranting and raving about it. The very same people praised, lauded and started dream casting the actors/actresses in future projects after they saw the film.
My point? Why not wait until the movie is actually made and you SEE it before writing anyone or anything off?
Seems a bit premature considering not one frame of celluloid has been exposed to light on this project yet...

^ ::shakes head:: You are completely ridiculous.
I completely agree Craig. All this speculation is pretty unfair and just a bit silly. Besides, the role is very much a character role, often played with a character voice. She doesn't have to have the most spectacular vocal technique on the planet, just pull of a believable yet likeable/not completely obnoxious character voice with a good dose of physical comedy. Bynes may not by the best drammatic actress on the planet, but she is quite good at creating off-the-wall characters.

What is wrong with a healthy discussion speculating the casting?
Should we refrain from saying things (or is it only negative things...?) about projects that have yet to begin?
Is this a new BWW rule?

I'm personally kind of scared to see her interpretation.
All I can see is one of the stupid characters from her show playing Penny, and it kind of terrifies me.
I don't know, I will give her the benefit of the doubt... I'm just so used to Kerry Butler that it's hard to think of anyone else.

You raise a good point Munk. I think folks can have opionions on casting both negative and positive and this is free forum for that. I think what I'm learning is that if you don't like the thread or disagree with it, then don't respond to it or engage it and let those interested in it have their say. This appeals to me more than reprimaning others for expressing negative opinions. I know people feel it is waste of time to discuss such things, but some do not and it is not one member's place to shame others for expressing themselves.
I'd like to add that I think Amanda is a top-notch comedic actress who carried a sketch comedy show on her shoulders since she was a young teen. I think she is very talented and the producers, who have more insight than us most of the time, trust her with the role. I wish her all the best.

I have actually worked with Amanda in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (albeit, many years ago) and she is a GREAT actress.
Oh, and I have heard her sing. Many times. Don't worry. She certainly has the pipes for this role. Trust me.
I am so proud of her ... she is going to be amazing in this!!!

Posted: 7/6/06 at 1:55pmAmanda always gives a NEW performance. None of her chracters are ever treated the same. They may all have a quirkiness to them, but thats amanda shining through. She will be lovely as Penny. She looks the part, she talks the part. I have so much faith.

Posted: 7/6/06 at 2:31pmI think her Penny will be a scene stealer for very good reasons. Singing? I've never heard her, but I just hope that she can really belt it out at the end.

Well I think that she's a good fit for this kind of part and wouldn't worry at all if it weren't for the singing. As long as she can belt that high and not kill the music I don't care and look forward to seeing her.
It kind of confuses me as to why/how though some people on these message boards make it sound like it's easy to sing Penny's part, or anything for that matter. Everything you hear on stage and on the cd is technique, no matter how easy it sounds. Just because you can carry a tune does not mean that you can pull off any kind of role, despite the fact that you may look right for it. I don't know - just seems like some people (not all) are completely unaware of how HARD and complex singing - and singing well - actually is.
