Well, Ann Hathaway would be a little old for the role, but five years ago she would have KILLED in the role. Girl is a great comedienne! Right now, of the movie stars who could do the role, I'd still say she was top of the list.

Of people on their way up, I'd say Becca Tobin who plays Kitty on "Glee" might be wonderful in the film.

I fear what casting someone from GLEE would do to this film It'd be great for $$$. But something tells me it would turn into a anti-bulleying PSA straight out of the 90s.

The only girl I can see as Elphaba right now is Lea Michelle.

Not sure she has the vocal chops to pull it off.

"We know Emma Stone can sing"

We do? If you're referring to her vocals in Easy A, then she is by no means ready for the Wicked score.

PArt of the success of Les Mis is the appeal has crossed so many markets. Its also a world wide brand. Wicked is no where near as big as Les Mis around the world. If they cast people from Glee (a show that may be close to being axed by the time the movie comes out) you will only appeal to the tween/teen market and some adults...and those people would have probably gone to see it anyway. It also wont get taken seriously as a prestige project for awards success like Les Mis has done. To appeal to more people, and a wider market outside of the US they will need some big names

Also, belting out songs on screen doesnt work, and thats why many dont like movie musicals and cringe. So it would not surprise me if keys are lowered etc and arrangements changed a bit to factor in lesser singers. I Dreamed a Dream has shown it can work to amazing affect to the point i think that song is far more emotional on screen than on stage where its just belted out. In the same way movie actors cant always sing the scores as well as stage actors, stage actors often cant act convincingly on screen (Megan Hilty, talented as she is, is like a cartoon character on Smash and Aaron Twait looked lost in Les Mis. Sam Barks however did show promise)

As for Phantom, In my view the Phantom movie started to go wrong the moment they hired the director and it just went down hill from there.

As far as on screen belting is concerned I understand...kind of. Barbra Streisand belted the sh!t out of DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE in FUNNY GIRL and they gave her an Oscar.

Maybe it worked back then and people were more accepting of it then and not now...tastes change, I get that...but all I ask is that the performer be able to SING!

Perfect example: Samantha Barks in LES MISERABLES, a role she belted out on stage and adjusted for the film...she didn't belt and still managed to convey the emotions of the songs without compromising their integrity and sing them just as beautifully.

So it can be done without sacrificing quality.

And although I "appreciate" Miss Seyfried's honesty in acknowledging she would need two years of vocal training before even attempting a role in WICKED, she should have used that same common sense and just backed away from accepting the role in LES MISERABLES. She makes a pretty fetching Cosette as long as she keeps her trap shut.

I´m not sure if they will take known actors. In some interview Stephen Schwartz said that we probably not know the leading characters yet, for they probably now still are attending high school. But at the same time he thinks it would be silly not to consider Lea Michelle... As for Michelle, wouldn´t she be too old as well when the movie is made, maybe next year? Now she is 26, turning 27 this year, when the movie is in the making she would be turning 28. But I don´t think age is that important for the role of Elphaba, cause the green make-up would hide a lot. I have my own favourite who sould play Elphie in the movie, but most would consider her as too old (and it´s not Idina) but like I said, I think regarding Elphaba age is not that important, couse in her case it can be hidden. With Glinda it´s not that easy. Glinda should really be played by a young actress.

IMHO they should take an actress who actually played Elphaba on stage and maybe a well knows actress as Glinda.

And Lea Michelle would be just wrong.

That wasn't Schwartz necessarily saying that the cast will be unknowns, just that you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for the film to be made because it is still some ways away.

Declarke:

"Let the film MAKE stars like the Broadway show did (and has done)."

Well said! If a girl is genuinely fantastic, the word of mouth will spread like fire. Audiences love seeing new stars and filmmakers should love to create them.

Princeton: "As for Phantom, In my view the Phantom movie started to go wrong the moment they hired the director and it just went down hill from there."

Exactly.

In my opinion this film shouldn't be taken seriously.
Why does Cameron Mackintosh not make a real Phantom of the Opera musical film? Just because someone tried and failed once, doesn't mean you can't make a good film of it.

I also kind of get the point of not belting of screen but I'm completely against it. As living proof that belting does impact and attracts audiences, stands the most celebrated performance on a musical film this century, Jennifer hudson in Dreamgirls.

Throughout this season Lea has proven what an amazing actress she can be and the voice goes without saying. Call me crazy but I think she could win the Oscar.

I don´t think we have to wait several years till the movie is made. Everywhere I read something about 2014, on IMDB for example and on that page

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a460575/wicked-movie-adaptation-coming-sooner-rather-than-later.html

As for Lea, I have nothing against her, I like her singing, but I can´t imagine her singing "No good deed" or "Defying Gravity" as it is supposed to sing. I know defying gravity glee version and it seems to me her voice hasn´t the depht she needs as Elphaba and her voice is too girly IMHO. Elphaba needs a strong voice.

Sorry to bring up a wicked movie casting thread (this was the first one i could find) but just rewatching Hairspray movie and to me Michelle Pfeifer would make the perfect Morrible. Id forgotten how brilliant she was in Hairspray

Id still love Justin Timberlake as Fiyero, although i realise we are fast running out of time for him to be age appropriate
