'American Idiot' closing rumors... via Twitter!

"@TheatreFan4 The producers of the recent Ragtime revival also sent out a Tweet denying rumours that show was closing as well."

Did they ever! Remember that giant NY Times article about how the show wasn't going to close. And then, I think it might have literally been the next day, they posted the closing notice.

Good god people, the show is making between 700 and 800 grand a week. People are talking like its doing bad. Even if its nut was 650 thousand a week its always making more than that. Every show will suffer after the holidays, yet people on here seem to think AI is gonna nose dive more than others. Maybe it will but right now its doing great and has yet to lose any money.

It's not us saying it's going to nose dive. The higher ups are the ones saying that.

If the show were going to close, why would they 1) re-up John Gallagher Jr's contract? 2.) Start a promotional street team?
That's too much of a hassle if they saw it would be closing soon...

They should film AMERICAN IDIOT before closing it. I'm sure all GREEN DAY fans would buy that DVD in a heartbeat, regardless of how good the show really is.

@TaleofTwo Really? The majority of the Green Day fans I know are appalled by American Idiot and wouldn't want a DVD if it were given to them for free. That's not true. They may download it. Green Day fans want DVDs of their favourite band and not a DVD of others singing Green Day songs.

how was the show doing during the school year, before summer started? labor day weekend is going to be a major turning point for a show like this, when the kids will be gone. i was at the show the other night, saturday and wednesday, and wednesday when i sat in the mezz, row H through to the rear mezz were completely empty.

what the show really needs to do is build a better system for getting people into the show - better discounts, better lottery - because i do believe they are still pricing out a huge portion of their audience.

Sorry to nit-pick but whoever said the St. James is the fourth largest Broadway house...that is incorrect. The Palace is the 4th largest house at 1784 seats and the St. James is 8th largest with 1623 seats.

Where are you getting those numbers?

According to the grosses, St. James has 13,672 and Palace has 13,576.

Uh, where did you hear that John G. JR signed a new contract? Did I miss something ?

I talked to him myself. He's contracted until January.

Contracts are only valid until a show closes so there is no reason to read anything into the renewing of a contract -- a performer after all can't perform without one, but a show can close the day the day its signed.

So, some kid named Spencer who is an "actor, choreographer, musical director, music critic, and voice teacher" (and btw, with all those talents, how is this kid not on Broadway right now?!) tweets that it's closing and this rumor gets traction? Geez. I mean, there are lemmings and then there are bww lemmings.

The show is grossing solid numbers and the nut is low (I believe Sundaymorning's number since there is no moving set and the band is small) so the only fact we know is that the show is positively working to pay off it's initial investment. Of course it's gonna drop in the fall, but how much and what that means is nothing but speculation from some west coast mega-talent pulling ideas out of his ass right now.

Why not spare the "show is closing" rumors until there is actually something to talk about?

Why would a show that last week posted grosses of over $800,000 last week be closing at the end of the next week? That's just not a logical statement. There are several shows in bigger theaters that are playing to lower capacity and lower grosses. This show is definitely making money, whether or not the nut is $450k or $600k or whatever. I would expect to see American Idiot at the St. James for a while.
