bo singing "hair", now that will crack me up!!
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell

Weird. This morning on the bus I thought "It would be cool if they did a bway night on American Idol." Wow, I'm psychic.

Carrie should do "You Oughtta Be Here With Me" from BIG RIVER, no? Or "We Make A Beautiful Pair" from SHENENDOAH?

Well, I was supposed to wait till my friend came over to start drinking, but after Scott's "rendition" of a wonderful song, I poured myself a large glass of wine.
That was awful and I am scared for the rest of the show.

Well all I can say is I HOPE they get better from here as the first one was mmmmm less then brilliant..... I think we should maybe have seperation between American Idol and Broadway... I find it interesting that there is no belting numbers in the listing..
Particularly after the NY Times Article recently..

I'm taping this so I havn't seen it yet, but I'm so mad they're not doing Rent. I have always wanted them to do a Broadway theme and hear someone sing from Rent.

i watched it, and i was not impressed with many of their performances. i knew that they would rework most of the songs to make them more "pop-ish," but still. I wish someone could have sung in a legit broadway style to really showcase some possible talent outside of screaming some rock ballad. broadway songs are not very easy to sing, usually. they could have done better.

no wonder there's a massive public who doesn't like musicals -- this was all old stuff sung in painful ways. ugh. Almost made *me* not love musicals. (too late to really turn that tide...)

Thought-- wouldn't Constantine being on the tour of RENT constitute as professional... making him not eligible to be on AI?

It's a shame these kids, for the most part, went into this theme completely blind as to the possibilites it had for them. So many lost opportunities.
The Sound of Music - Anthony sang Climb Every Mountain - messed up lyric once and missed many notes - interesting arrangement, though.
West Side Story - Nikko sang One Hand, One Heart - Too many notes - this was a complete distortion of an extraordinarily simple and beautiful melody in an effort to hide the fact he couldn't find any of the correct notes. From the if you can't find a song you want to sing, then sing the song you do pick any darn way you want school.
Babes in Arms - Constantin sang My Funny Valentine - one of the best of the night. Obviously he was the one person who had a clue as to the range of material available.
Man of La Mancha - Scott (and I like him, I really do like him) sang The Impossible Dream, turning it into The Impossible Note. Just unfortunate.
Pippin - Bo rocked on Corner of the Sky - missed a lyric, but rocked none-the-less.
The King & I - Carrie sang Hello Young Lovers in a kind of 50's Teresa Brewer Hit Parade arrangement - my favorite of the night. This could have sold a lot of records in 1957.
Funny Girl - Vonzell sang People - Despite Paula's bizarre comments about Streisand's inability to hit notes Vonzell did, I've seen, honestly, dozens of beauty pageant contestants sing it as well or better. Why must everyone skip the verse and go directly to the chorus?
Oliver - Nadia kicked it up a notch with As Long As He Needs Me. Elegant and simple, honoring the beauty of the songwriting. She wins last night's Diva trophy.
Camelot - Anwar sang If Ever I Would Leave You with major diction problems and great distortion of the melody, ending up sounding pretty much like everything else he's done.
My 2 cents.

Who is going? I have no clue, but Anthony should go, it was horrible.
None of them were very good. I'd say Carrie, Bo and Nadia did the best, but they all picked bad songs and had bad arrangements.
Even Nadia, who picked a good song, As Long As He Needs Me, didn't do it it justice, because I don't think she understood the context of the song. She sang it like it was Stand By Your Man instead of a song about a woman who couldn't leave her abusive boyfriend. It's supposed to be a desperate song and that's not the way she delivered it.
I'm so disappointed because it had the potential to be a great night and they blew it. They should've brought in a broadway professional to help them pick songs and understand them.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson
