Just for the record. . .I am the merchandising person who was spoken to. . .and I said she may be back on Tuesday, as in this coming Tuesday. She was out last night's and today's show, but I never said she will be out a full week. If that does happen though, it wouldn't be the worst thing. Many, many more people deserve to see La Spanger in this role.
She did have bronchitis during previews. Amy is a real trooper, I wish her the best. I love Amy Spanger.
I hope her voice has a speedy recovery. She's fabulously talented!
I would totally be wicked happy if she were in the shoe this Wednesday, but I would rather her voice have the chance to get healthy.
I just give her props for getting soaked halfway through the show every night and not getting sicker than she has been.
I'm going to see the show this Saturday, and I was really hoping Amy would be in, as I'm a huge fan of hers. I've heard good things about Cara though, and I would rather Amy get better than go on just to go on and harm her voice more.
Here's to hoping Amy gets better.
I love how everyone in NY is on this site! It's awesome!
Everyone in the tri-state area! And we are all somehow connected!

Why does everyone performing on Broadway need to be as bullet proof as Ethel Merman?
Just a quick observation. I find it disheartening to hear everyone sympathizing with poor Amy blowing out her voice at a show. "oh i hope she gets better" etc, which of course happens. But god forbid John Lloyd Young sounds a little raspy after singing 27 songs, people $hit on him for not being up to snuff. Not so much any more, but you can all recall the absolute crap he had to endure when his voice was a smidgen off. If more people took voice lessons from Katie Agresta, they wouldn't be having as many problems. But also, not everyone is as disciplined and regimented as JLY, but I'm glad the harassment stopped.
I'm sorry about Amy's voice, but I find this sympathy rather unnecessary - its by far nothing compared to what JLY endured when people criticized him and doubted him when he actually was doing the impossible...
Well, I'll look into taking lessons with Katie Agresta to head off any future vocal problems.
Sarcasm aside, I really think that your comment was unnecessary. Why compare the two of them, just because some people said nasty things about JLY? People are mean. You can't control that. I personally said nothing against him, but that's not the point. I'm sorry that people were so horrible to him about his voice. There's no need to "$hit" on Amy, either. John and Amy are both amazingly talented performers, and great people, and if somebody wants to be sympathetic to either one of them, that really shouldn't be an issue.
When I saw Jersey Boys for the second time on Friday, November 25th at 2pm, JLY was out and I saw his understudy Dominic Nolfi (who had no upper register at all). However, later when my companion, DottieD'Luscia, and I walked by the stage door, we saw JLY walk in because he was going to do the evening show. Then a few minutes later, we both saw Liza Minnelli walk in the stage door. She attended the evening performance that day.
This is how I interpreted that day. JLY wanted to rest his voice during the day so he would be in full voice for the performance that Liza was seeing (yes, the cast members knew she would be there that evening). I guess it is possible that he wasn't feeling well in the morning and then felt better at 6pm, but that is just not how I viewed the whole situation. TONS of people in the audience that afternoon were very disappointed the JLY was out and even more disappointed when Dominic didn't impress us. Even though he was not sick that day, he denied the afternoon audience his amazing talent so he could rest up for Liza.
End rant.
That being said, get well soon, Amy! You will be missed at TWS!

Hope she's up to speed soon!! What an amazingly talented singer.
Just for the record, Stephen Lynch has yet to miss a performance in The Wedding Singer in NY or Seattle.

Without a trace -- I think that was the day after the thanksgiving day parade and they were up at 4am or something absurd like that... and it was winter, and it was the holiday rush, and they'd been open for like 5 weeks at that point and were still getting into nonstop marathon mode, bla bla bla, whatever...
I was, though, only making an observation that one actor got abused for missing a show, while another gets courtesy and get well wishes for the same situation. John got dragged through a lot of sludge and still came out on top.

JerseyGirl, I have to disagree that JLY only misses shows due to illness.
He says himself on his website that the producers alot him one show a week to rest his voice, and that he ocasionally takes it (usually the Tuesday evening show or Wednesday matinee.) Is he entitled to this? Absolutely. But I don't think it is fair for you to say he has never missed a show for vocal issues when he is in fact alotted absences to do just that.
If JLY's role in Jersey Boys is too vocally taxing, he should just have someone go on for him at Wednesday and Saturday matinees so that theatergoers won't be disappointed when he is not in the show. I believe Patti LuPone had a 6 show per week schedule during Evita, as did Audra McDonald during Marie Christine.
I have a feeling that if JLY extends his contract past October, he will go on a six show a week schedule, just like Victoria Clark did when she extended her contract in Piazza.

sw - a 6 show week would be quite wise. I wonder what he's deciding in this crunch time and contract renegotiation time - anyone know? have you heard anything?

Hey, this thread is about Amy Spanger! not Jersey Boys.
I love JLY and all, but I don't understand where he factored in with Amy Spanger.
I hope she gets better. She was awesome. I think it's best that she's taking off so her problem doesn't get any worse. To all you people saying that she shouldn't be getting sick think of this. Would you rather see a show with a really good understudy who is in full health, or the regular actor who physiclly can't speak or sing at all. People can't help getting sick just so you know.
