Went to the Media Theater production of MAME...Andrea is really amazing in this. When she is singing IF HE WALKED INTO MY LIFE with all the sadness and feeling that Christine Baranski could never find I just was stunned ..This is a great performace and she sings every song with a crystal clear voice You can hear every single word...her voice has gotten better over the years and then ther is Lea Delaria who kills it as Vera....she is hysterical...a really good production ...
Andrea belongs on Broadway!!!
Yea I aggree (aboutg McCardle) but DeLaria belongs in Pennsylvania or in a place far away from New York.

Golden Boy LMAO....I enjoyed Lea ..it was a little odd she was dressed like a man in a tux at the beginning ....like a lesbian VERA but it did make me laugh
A lesbian Vera would explain why she seems to have no life apart from Mame.
Doesn't it sort of complicate the lyrics 'THE MAN IN THE MOON IS A GIRL"?
Actually, that makes sense from a lesbian POV.
I personally find Lea Delaria disturbing to look at. I wouldn't be interesting in any production of Mame that included her.
"Disturbing to look at?"
Do you feel the same way about effeminate twinky boys?
Nope. Let's face it- overweight men are not attractive. It isn't a pleasing aesthetic. Why a woman would and to duplicate it is beyond me. lol

Funny, neither are assholes.
Word to the wise.

Indeed! It could be the latest lesbian ANTHEM! A partner to "I Am What I Am", also by Herman.
What's wrong with DeLaria's looks? If you don't like gender bending, that's your right, I guess, but are we really planning to ban fat people from the stage?!
Actually, when I've seen DeLaria, she hasn't been all that fat. She is very short, so any weight shows. She has tremendous stage presence, however, which is perfect for Vera!
I think DeLaria's stage persona is very in your face and unapologetic. I find her off-putting, but I think that's the whole point of her persona. I doubt she'd give a second though to what I think. LOL
Vera Charles isn't exactly a shrinking violet, love.
What do you want from the musical theater? Nothing but happy stories about handsome people?
Plus, there's also the Alice Toklas and Gertrude Stein reference in Bosom Buddies.
Vera Charles is a woman. Not a gender bender. Sorry, but I find people like Lea Delaria and "Chaz" Bono kind of gross. Call me crazy.

Lovebwy... You do know that Lea Delaria was actually born a woman. And Chaz Bono had gender re-assignment surgery. That is two totally different things. (And yes, I do believe I will call you crazy) -- I bet you are the kind of person who thought the DeafWest Production of Big River was inappropriate or would never have gone and seen the All Asian Cast of "Falsettos"

I saw this show Saturday and enjoyed it.
I don't find people like Chaz Bono and Lea Delaria to be "kind of gross." Live and let live.
I suppose I would go to it if I were deaf!
But seriously, I'm just a traditionalist. I wouldn't mind seeing Lea Delaria in other roles, but not Vera Charles.

Of course you have the right to spend your theater dollars as you choose, but let's be clear: the problem you outline above is yours, not Delaria's or Bono's.
I saw Delaria play a female role in BOYS FROM SYRACUSE without any gender bending. It was the closest I've ever seen to Merman (whom I saw on stage 47 years ago), in terms of vocals, stage presence and what Sondheim calls "low comedy". In short, Delaria was brilliant and nobody cared how much she weighed.
Well perhapse I've been too hasty. If she can play Vera and act like an actual woman, I might be down with that.

I didn't really put this post up to hear homophobic/tranphobic (if that's a word lol) comments on Chaz Bono not to mention the overweight comments......such a kind and sensitive comment. I am sure you are perfect and congrats on that. This is a theater blog I thought we were kind of immune to the ugly comments...Lea gave a great performance it was unique and not a copy of every other Vera...she was funny and can really belt out a song...
LOVEBWY you sound like a really disgusting kind of a person ..put your picture on here so the rest of us can see what we think of you

Andrea and Lea are coming to Bucks County Playhouse in Mame next month. Is this the same full production? How are the sets, costumes, and all the rest? Bucks is a little short on space and facilities (particularly fly space) so I'm curious how this is going to be.
Is there any chance that this could transfer to Broadway? Has one of their productions ever transferred?
